Our 4yr old son has been diagnosed as PDD-NOS. Mainly he has a speech delayed development. Fortunately he is highly functional, very active and social. Hes currently enrolled in a 3hr special education school here in Puerto Rico and is having speech therapy, 45min 3 times per week. But the economic climate here has not been very positive to the point that services offered to special ed students are suffering mayor budget cuts.

We are currently planning to move to the Mainland US by summer 2012, the time where he would be going to Kindergarden. We are looking for possible options and one of them is heading out to FL where we have family and friends, specifically in the Central Florida area. We are taking this year and a half to find out where we should relocate to best suit his needs.

We wanted more information on what programs are available and what schools offer integrated educational programs, so we can make a more educated decision on our relocation.

Thanks in advanced for any information and help.

Lake Silver Elementary in the college park area of Orlando has a whole wing for students with special needs. It is a "center" school for the school system for children with special needs.

Thank you for posting this! My son also has PDD-NOS, is 7 years old, and we are also considering moving to the Orlando area. He is also high-functioning and in a Gen Ed class... we have received very good services for him in NY, but it is too expensive here. I want to make sure I find the BEST school for him (as well as for his typically-developing little brother) before we make any decisions. I see this post was made 4 years ago. I'm curious to see what the feedback is now!

I too would like to know about schools with good special education, but my son will be going into 6th grade which is usually middle school. He too is PDD-NOS and is in special program of half special day classes/ gen ed. Maybe someone will see this and post new information.

I would personally hire private speech therapists. You cannot count on the public education system, especially in Central Florida, to sufficiently educate your special needs child. Private speech therapy is not horribly expensive and is often covered by health insurance.
