You are probably right - I do get passionate about my food shopping! The rumours I have heard in the past about them coming to Florida was that they were eyeing somewhere between 3 and 5 locations, starting in the south and working up the coast - I specifically heard Naples, Sarasota, Tampa, in that order, but as I said, this was from "anonymous" sources, but did read that from several blogs and websites. It's been said execs have been scouting here and in Tampa, and since Naples was formally announced, tend to believe it's true. So I can't wait! I just love new shopping options!

Not to mention Publix, IMO has a very limited selection of grocery products. I really don't think all these people promoting Publix have grocery shopped anywhere West of the Mississippi, really. Where's Tom Thumb, Kroger, a dedicated WalMart solely for food, Albertsons, and the Winn Dixie's here are just nasty, that's why they always fail.
I totally agree.

I've posted this before in other threads; after moving back to MA I almost cried when I saw the produce departments of Stop & Shop and Shaws! Publix has the scantiest, lousiest produce department ever. The bananas are always soft, fruit has little taste, and the pickings are slim.

I don't think they are overpriced at all.

I spend a lot of time in MA, NH, and VT for work and find jsut the opposite. Shaws has terrible produce, as does Hannafords. Not a huge fan of Stop & Shop, although they normally have decent produce.

I noticed prices have been rising faster at Publix than some other local stores. Also, Publix sticks their eggs to the carton with some kind of glue. Some eggs crack when you try to pull them out. I just had 4 cracked eggs(due to sticking) in my last dozen from Publix.

Their chicken is often smelly...even when you check the dates and they are several days out...even when you try to pick the coldest packs and bring it straight home and into the fridge and cook it the same day or next day. This has occurred to us at 3 different Publix.

I no longer buy Chicken or eggs at Publix. Actually started shopping at Sweetbay more often and their prices used to seem higher than Publix. But Sweetbay is lower priced than Publix on many items. Sweetbay always has excellent meat (never stinky chicken). Sweetbay also has a wider selection of produce and other goods that you might not find at other supermarkets. I have fun trying new items from Sweetbay.

I am just about at the point now where I won't be going to Publix any more for anything. What a shame, they were the "go to" store for a long time.

Anyway, here in Sarasota, besides having the BEST and newest Publix stores I have ever seen, we also have Albertson's, a fantastic Super Target (FULL grocery line), many super Walmarts (and soon to get a grocery-only Walmart), Fresh Market, Whole Foods, Morton's Market (independent gourmet grocery) Sweetbay, Bravo, Aldi and a whole slew of independent farmer's markets, bakeries, butchers, ethnic stores, health food stores, etc. I am incredibly spoiled by my shopping choices in a small city such as this. I feel pretty sure we will be getting Trader Joe's before long, since they just announced their first store to open in Naples.

I shop at many places, and Publix is always included. They have good sales, customer service and many organics. My three main stores are Super Target, Aldi, and Publix, but also shop at Fresh Market and the local farmstands.
Sarasota has an Aldi? Where?

The same applies to their Rotisserie Chickens which always sound so good (Mojo especially) but when I get it home it has a weird slimy, mushy texture to it that makes me want to gag. I've fallen for it a few times because I keep thinking "it's a different store this time", "maybe it was a bad day", etc. but always the same results...

I've never had a problem with the chicken smelling bad, or even making me gag :/ how odd
