So it was reported today that the Big East will extend an invitation to UCF in all sports AND the ECHL announced Orlando has been awarded an expansion Hockey team. Both great news in my opinion. I was skeptical about the Big East being a good move for UCF with all the recent defections, but after learning that they would also invite Boise State, Air Force, Navy, Houston and SMU the league may end up stronger than before. As for hockey, the ECHL has been around for 25 years, draw well in there current cities, and has direct ties to the NHL so I am excited about this league as well. Great day.

Yes, but how long will the echl last in Orlando. I can't see it staying around due to the cost to operate at the Amway. But only time will tell, and for the record I hope it does work out.

No need to discount the Big East. It is way better than CUSA. It has an autobid/nicer TV contract i.e. more exposure. And if you go into Basketball, they still are a power conference, even with Pitt, Syracuse, and WVU gone.

The football side will be a bit less riveting I think but not a major dropoff, however the prospect of UCF playing schools like Georgetown, Villanova, St Johns, Marquette, Seton Hall, Notre Dame and Providence on a regular basis will bring a lot of excitement and prestige to the UCF basketball program.

Initially I thought the same thing Kyle but after thinking about it more...they may be better off. WVU, Syracuse, Pitt are more storied programs with more NFL players but they are in decline. Today, Boise State is a much better flagship football program than WVU. I don't see this changing either as Boise has proven themselves as perenial BCS busters. Syracuse just got thumped by up and coming Louisville, who in my opinion will be the next U. They recruit great out of South Florida and in the next few years will be a Beast in football. UCF and Houston are also up and coming. UCF recruiting will only get stronger now that they are in an automatic qualifying conference. I think the Big East is a legit BCS conference again and will be only stronger in the future. I really hope they invite one more team (hopefully BYU) so we can try to lure the Big East Conference Championship game here to Orlando!

LOL I thought the same but unfortunately in the sports world (broadcasting in particular) old-and-storied beats out up-and-coming until it begins to look completely ridiculous for the networks. It's taken Boise State an extraordinary period of time to breakthrough and they're still not there yet as it appears they'll go undefeated once again and be locked out of the national championship game. Notre Dame football hasn't been relevant for awhile but didn't stop NBC from an exclusive contract for all the bandwagon Catholics to tune in for. I agree that Louisville has potential and it appears Houston has a legit shot at a respectable (undefeated yet overlooked) finish like Boise State. Despite squealing from Villanova I suspect Temple will be the last add-in though BYU would give more than one reason for teams to travel west other than Boise.

Notre Dame is still an independent in football and there's something called tradition at Notre Dame. Something UCF will never have ... but they will have all of those southern Baptist bandwagoners ...

Tradition is born, built and developed over time. Notre Dame had to start their Irish traditions at some point and UCF has been doing that recently. To say they will NEVER have tradition...well it's just not credible. I am not a UCF alumni, I went to a more "traditional" school but I admire what's happening at UCF and where they came from.

I think this is a pretty cool tradition they're developing.

I did Spirit Splash during my freshman year in '04 and loved it. They always have a big name act play in front of the fountain and it's just a wild time that speaks to the essence of attending college in Orlando, fun!! UCF will probably never be like Notre Damn or even FSU or UF, but it doesn't need to be because it is an incredible school with it's own attitude, way of life, image, and "tradition." UCF is one of the nation's top 3 schools for attendance and that speaks for itself about how the school is perceived.

I always thought the essence of attending college is to get a great education and prepare for the real world after college. Fun is just a by-product.

As far as being an incredible school, how does it rank academically ?

UCF | University of Central Florida | Best College | US News

We can see that it has a long way to go and most of you will probably be taking your dirt nap if and when it ever cracks the top 50. And since when is the volume of students indicative of how great the school might be ? Maybe they take anyone with a pulse or all of those that couldn't get into FSU, Miami, or UF ...
