Default Help!!!!!! Moving to Orlando!!!!!!!!

Hello, I am considering moving to the Orlando area. However I have read some no so nice things about the area. Let me start off by telling you a little about my reason to move. I have just recently gone through two huge family crises, and I looking for a place to start all over. I have visited Orlando and I really liked it there. I am in my 20’s and I thought it had many things for a person of my age to do. However, by reading some posts about the Orlando area it kind of makes me worry, my main concern in the job market. By reading some articles on-line Orlando is supposed to have a very good job market, however that’s not what I am reading. I am in the administrative field. I am looking in to the Winter Garden area. The houses seem affordable. Is this a nice place for a yound single female to live? What’s that area like? Can any one provide insight on the job market? What about the high crime rates?

A caveat is that you're just one in a million trying to swim upstream here in this one-horse town. You're not special at all.
Jobs are hard to come by esp. good paying ones. How will you pay your rent? There's alot of unemployed people in this state. Example: The state was expecting 1000 people for unemployment and 6000 showed up that was 3weeks ago. That was on AM radio so it's a pretty good source.
Rent is high in Florida. You will need a roommate. Do you have anyone in mind? Do you have money in savings? You will need probably 5 mos. as a safety net. Read your rental contract in case you need to get out of it. You may change your mind about living here and want to leave after being knee-deep in the hoopla of Bizarre-O-land. Life is very tough here.
You'd probably make out better waiting tables. Read more of the forums on here. Moonbeam

You don't "have" to believe anything on this site.....just come see for yourself and im sure you'll find alot of what locals saying on here to be true and some things might not be as bad depending on what you like to do or what your habits are.....for instance if you are a homebody and just stick to your little neighborhood while living here then of coarse you might not see things happen because you shelter yourself but if you get out alot to other parts of town and have to drive through some rough areas every now and then or even some of the suburbs then you might have more stories to tell.....the crime is bad in the bad areas but just don't go to certain areas and in nicer communities you still need to watch your back but you should be fine in the nicer communities......

No one really says things are worse here compared to other places but outsiders usually just cant believe that our bad areas are as bad as thier home city because we are Disneyworld in everyone elses eyes so i guess thats why people come on here and question whether or not there is a crime issue compared to where they are from because its hard for them to believe that Mickey Mouse would allow that stuff to go on .........

Orlando suburbs are not like a suburb somewhere in Wisconson where you most definatly "won't" see crime....there are other places that are bad in the U.S. and have the same problems but if you visited here before and thought that Orlando was where Universal Studios and Disney area was then you might have a false sense of what the actual city of Orlando is like. In the actual city it feels like a mix of cultures and like a normal running city except that the city leaders and city planners dont do such a good job and the police won't help you out here unless you are actually bleeding from a gunshot wound

Default moving to Orlando

Actually I said that I was in my 20's NOT 20 years old....... I am in my mid 20's to be more exact. I am planning on buying property NOT renting sooooo... NO I don't need a roommate, and yes I have money in my savings account.

But thanks for the advice on Jobs, I will keep that in mind.

I could probably be accused of being a doomsayer/naysayer so I'm going to change my tone for this post.

You might do OK in Orlando. The job market is tight in alot of fields. If you have very good credentials, and above all experience, you might do OK. Have a job lined up before you move down here permanently, though.

There are many things for a young person to do in Orlando but honestly if you want real, authentic culture Orlando might not be for you. Most of the "stuff" in Orlando that people like doing, is stuff setup for tourists. Mall at Millenia (which has horrible, tourist trapping prices), the theme parks, etc. It's probably like a family friendly version of Las Vegas, except we have amusement parks instead of gambling. Personally, I find McCulture to be an eyesore. There are alot of scenic neighborhoods in Orlando like Winter Park and parts of Sanford but mostly I would say it is forgettable or at worst an eyesore.

It is very advisable to have a job prior to moving here. You will be competing with 30 or more qualified applicants for each administrative job that becomes available. College degrees are more important than ever down here, because that at least gives you a little edge. They prefer college degrees for even the lowest level administrative jobs. Also bilingual (Spanish) is a big plus.

Hi! I think you will LOVE the Orlando area! There are good job opportunities depending on which field you do, there are safe communities for a single woman to live in, and that is what the locals are for so we can help you out! I moved to Florida in 1990, way before the internet was popular, I wish I would have had a website like this to give inside information! PM me or email anytime, and I'll be happy to answer your questions!

Smile Move Here Now!

I remember thinking how OJ Simpson seemed like such a nice guy from his on screen persona. How could he be accused of such a heinous crime?

Well, you can't believe everything you see (or read). Make up your own mind about what you read, even this post.

Florida has one of this countries top economies. We have job growth, population growth, one of the lowest unemployment rates nationally. Why? Weather, low taxes, growth.

Orlando has been a consistent leader in job creation, in a state that is top three nationally for joblessness and growth.

Why are people attracted to Orlando?
 • Inland, away from higher coastal winds brings new residents from coastal areas within the state
 • Orlando just got approval for a medical college at the University of Central Florida. Medical companies will cluster around this new endeavor bringing jobs, demand for housing, etc.
 • Burnham Institute is a biotech research firm that has recently announced it has selected Orlando as its new headquarters. Clusters of companies that support bio med research will converge. Jobs will be created, housing will be in demand, wages will increase.
Orlando is not just service industry jobs. You will love it here. I love it here. As for the naysayers, ask what grudge do they bear? Probably service industry grunts pissed off at British tourists not tipping them at the Cracker Barrell. You'll do well here.

BTW, Winter Garden property is a nice investment. There will be a lot of demand for quite a long time, as it is very conveniently located.

Best of Luck to you!
Tom Kessler

Yeah as a matter a fact i do deliver pizza here and its not the best job in the world but i "have" to do it......i dont have time to explain my life story to you so you can just sit and think you know my life just like you are doing already......well since u know everything and its such a good place to live for you.....

That is an "opinion" you are free to have

There are some people ......actually a majority of the Orlando workforce that does the jobs you make fun of and we actually see the issues going on around the city......its not the worst city to live in and its not Bagdad, but there are problems that are posted on here everyday that i and alot of others "can" relate to because they are on "our" level......We cant afford that nice house out in Lakes of Windemere or in Doctor Phillips....and some of us like "me" for instance are stuck living at home with our mother paying rent at 29 years old.....not everyone in Orlando will be hired for that list of jobs you speak of.....there are alot of factors in getting to be in one of those positions....

I deliver pizza and at my job there is a guy that was former U.S. military and he said that his girlfriend that lives near Doctor Phillips (a nice area) had her house broken in to by some thugs from Pine Hills.....and they were hitting houses in that area for a couple weeks but the police ended up catching them after a high speed chase one day that ended up in Pine Hills......this can happen in most cities (not "every" city...most) but you can't tell me or anyone here that there "isn't" a problem at all with Orlando........because guess what?....there are as many problems here as any other city and maybe more than some cities or a little less than some others but crime is an issue and its not safe to mislead people by thinking they cant have thier house broken into in good neighborhoods down here.......you need to take precautions .....not just wish that the hurricane isnt coming ......you should know it is coming and take precautions but not live in fear

I'm a transplant from California to Winter Garden. We (wife and kids) like where we live. We also did tons of research prior to relocating here. This forum was one of the many tools we used to gather information. But before making such an involved decision like purchasing your home, spend some time here, talk to the locals, visit other areas in and around Orlando. You mentioned that you've just gone through a major crisis and are single and looking for a fresh start. I don't want to sound like a shrink, but take the time to balance your emotional and reasoning self to set your priorities and goals straight. Winter Garden is a calm and quiet place which is a perfect setting for myself and my family. If you want an active social life, perhaps Central Florida may not even be for you. Again, spend some $, take a trip and take a look first.
