Default How about some POSITIVE posts?

OK, I've just about HAD IT! Anyone outside of Orlando reading these posts would think that this is the cesspool of the US! Folks, I've been to many places in the US and Orlando is nowhere near as bad as you all are making it out to be! I've been here for over 25 years and yes, Orlando has changed (what hasn't?) but there is a lot of good here too! Now before you get all mad at me, hear me out -- one main purpose of these forums are to help others learn about the area, not to illustrate every instance of road rage, high electric bills, or whatever else that has you upset at the moment. All places and people have problems -- just as all places and people have good things too.

You are really scaring off those that are interested in the area - quit using the forum as your personal dumping ground! What makes you think that your problems are problems for other people too?

The same thing that makes you think your positives will be positives for other people too!

Small town feel: GONE
Quality of life: GONE
Favorable Cost of Living: GONE
Speaking English: GONE
Entertainment: OK
Weather: OK

So if you love that damn mouse and enjoy going to the beach in February, this can be an ok place to live. Other than that, you could get the same quality of life in Detroit as you get in this 3rd world ghetto.

Why don't they do an episode of COPS in Orlando, if crime is that bad? It should make for a good episode.

Flanders - you are absolutely intitled to your opinion but you're viewpoint isn't shared by all. We all lead different lives. I have also lived in four different states and would not conclude that Orlando is a cesspool. There are plenty of nice areas and plenty of things to do. Do I think it is the best place to live? Heavens no. But I have to agree with the OP that people use these boards to vent their own personal situations. Instead of saying how bad everything is and blaming it all on Orlando, it would be more constructive if the poster would say, "this is how it is for ME in Orlando" rather than slamming the place as a whole.

Just a few comments to yours.

Small town feel: GONE - I could compare many many places that have changed over the years. Nothing much ever stays the same. Besides how can a town as large as Orlando have a small town feel? Probably in our own neighborhoods. My community has a very active association, neighborhood watch progam, girls night out, block parties, Easter egg hunts, progressive dinners and holiday parties.

Quality of life: GONE - I and others have a pretty good quality of life living here. We have a decent income and can afford a comfortable lifestyle. It's not "gone" for everyone.

Favorable Cost of Living: GONE come on... this is 2007 not 1970. Cost of living has gone up EVERYWHERE and FL is still cheaper than a lot of places.

Speaking English: GONE Very unfortunate and annoying. But... every single most southern state has this exact same problem, it is not unique to FL.

Entertainment: OK There is tons of things to do in decent areas of town. I've lived here 3 years and have never been to Disney World! We eat at a different restaurant most weekends, the choices are unlimited. We go to the beach, bowl, hit up the theaters, see concerts, jetski, shop - all in decent areas.

Weather: OK Weather is awesome 7 months out of the year. Summer can be extreme but that's what the pool is for.

So if you love that damn mouse and enjoy going to the beach in February, this can be an ok place to live. Other than that, you could get the same quality of life in Detroit as you get in this 3rd world ghetto.
Comparing Orlando to Detroit is really harsh!

Default I quit the Florida Forum

I quit participating in the Florida Forum for exactly this reason....

Instead of giving actual answers to the questions asked, the same people every time seem to think they need to show Florida and Orlando in the worst light possible....and if anyone disagrees with them, they are "sheep" or have rose colored glasses on.

I work, live and play in Orlando and Florida, and have done so for 25 years. I don't live in a ghetto, I don't get acosted by gangs every day and people are NOT running amok in the streets.....Don't hate me cuz I'm happy here....I'm just done with the Florida forum....

I love orlando for all it's positives and short falls. If it was the perfect like these negative posters want it to be then I"d complain how boring everything is and how everybody looks the same.

I like the diversity of people
I like that I can drive a few minutes and feel like I'm in another town altogether.
I like my FRIENDLY neighbors.
I love all the things there are to do around town.
I like that the city is "big" though I wish it was Bigger! (denser that is, not sprawl)

Get over all your hang ups that there is crime. Stop watching the news so much! all they report are the bad things. Move to tennessee or Georgia, they are so spread out the news doesn't get word they have murders. I've lived here 8 years now and the only crime i've been directly effected by was someone breaking my window to steal my cd player. THAT"S IT!

And as far as being affordable, seems like there are plenty of people that can afford their nice homes in the 250K range and even more that can afford their 500K+ homes. Again you can get HUGE properties up in Georgia and Tennessee for much less....good luck finding a great job though. North and south carolina are pretty much similarly priced to orlando nowadays.

I was beginning to worry! (remember, I'm French etc: see post Kissimmee/celebration)
what I don't understand is that you all agree to say that Spanish is now everywhere. People who criticize this should rather wonder how this happened?
Get more involved in politics, in your community, and try and make things change.
How about volunteering as a teacher for a few lessons of English as a second language? help people integrate.

Well, since Orlando is part of the United States, how about the newcomers learning English BEFORE they come here? Why make it our responsibility? If you moved to another country, wouldn't you learn as much of their language as you could BEFORE you moved there?

I do have a few positives though. Orlando does have some beautiful things in it. Also, the weather is beautiful there. But I'm POSITIVE that I'll never live there because of the high cost of living, employment situation, high crime, influx of foreign people, etc.

If they are that scarred of some words then they shouldn't come here in the first place.......You can't say you have lived "here" for 25 years and then compare it to anything else but alot of us can.......i have lived in 5 other states and yes there are similarities of bad areas and safe areas......but there is a worse problem than usual for this area....that is why they brought in the Guardian Angels ........so i think anybody with a complaint has a valid point right now.......but at the same time it isnt like Bagdad.....

except for maybe the families of people that have actually lost a loved one to violence here, so unless you are one of those people then you have no right to tell anyone it is or isnt as bad as people say....different people on here come from different backgrounds and places and have a different way of looking at things...they get thier opinions based on thier lifestyles and experiences while living here....it is not anyones fault if someone has been sheltered and never seen a bad thing happen here .........no one is saying that terrible things happen "only" in Orlando but i am saying that they do happen here just like anywhere else.....Mickey mouse doesnt protect us from being like any other city
