Default RN to Orlando area

My family of 6 is moving to the Orlando (Mascotte, Winter Garden??) area in a few months. I am an ICU nurse but I would like to get into home health or something similiar. Any ideas or information would be great. I make the only income for our family and right now I am making around $3200 month and our rent is $900 with our last electric bill topping $300. Just some quick information about us. I would like to do better in Florida and eventually purchase one of the short sell houses I am seeing online at great prices. My MIL did this 2 years ago and they are happy in Mascotte.

Thank you,
CJ

Why on earth would you choose Mascotte? It's not a particularly desirable area.

You'll pay $1200 and up to rent a decent place for a family of six in an OK school district. Utility bills will likely be about the same as what you're paying now.

Home health pays a lot less than specialized nursing.

A lot of the best short sale and foreclosure deals are already snapped up and off the market. Inventory is slowly starting to move, and in two years I think the deals will have been pick over by the cash buyers.

Please be absolutely sure before you move here. based on your post, it sounds like you think wages are higher and rents are lower than they actually are.

I appreciate your "helpfulness" but you strike me as someone who would be hard to work with or be around in relation to your attitude. Ill wait to see what other helpful replies I can garnish here. I have done a little research and am not going in to this blindly. All my wife's family lives in this area. The wages are quite a bit more than where I currently work and my income is for working weekend nights which comes with a hefty bonus. Many unknowns which cause me to question your desire to "strike down" any enthusiasm I currently have for this move.

If you want to rent a 4BR house in a nice area, then you will have to pay at least $1300 a month in rent. A 3BR house may be slightly less, but still around $1100 in the more desirable neighborhoods.

I am pretty sure the poster was trying to be helpful as well as honest with you, not "strike down" your enthusiasm. If you are only paying $900 in rent for a place that houses a family of 6, I'd say stay put. Why you would switch from ICU to home healthcare is also beyond me. Good luck to you.

Are you a nurse? I am burned out from sitting inside an ICU all day and night.
Home health affords at least a little bit of travel and movement.
I have three responses and only one which brings any constructive effort and help which I greatly appreciate. Many other issues at present. We are currently in the middle of the country and my wife has new medical issues which means we need quick access to good healthcare. I have my own reasons for moving to this area. Thank you Dnxplrng...

I have moved around quite a bit. The rent in Orlando is expensive. The further away from the city, the cheaper the rent is...usually. If you want to move to Macotte to be near family, then you might want to look at Clermont. I've only been there once, but it seemed rural and usually rural areas offer big houses with cheaper rent. Mascotte is in Lake county. You may want to go to greaterschools dot org and check out the schools in that district and then move to the area that is zoned for the school you like. Check out hotpads dot com for more help.

Well Mascotte isn't going to give "quick access to good medical care." The closest hospital is South Lake, which is a solid community hospital but has no specialties and is still a solid 35 minutes or more from most of Mascotte. Any sort of specialty care would be a full hour in Orlando.

I'm just trying to give you the truth, it's unfortunate that you're obviously bitter about something in your life and don't want to hear it.

The nurses that seem to make the most in this area are the ER/Trauma nurses willing to work overnight shifts. They are bringing in ~$40/hour and many are working 80/7 shifts so they have a lot of full days off.

I live in Clermont, and you aren't going to find a decent rental in the $900/mo range. You'd be looking at $1200 and up for 3BR, plus all utilities and lawn care.

You might check out the Bithlo or Christmas area east of Orlando off US50 which places you 20 miles from the Orlando Regional Medical Center campus.

I am also an experienced RN, we relocated to Orlando from Arizona approx 6 months ago. I am currently working for Orlando Regional Medical Center, but I need to tell you that nurses are paid less in Florida than in many other states (I really do not know why?). I was making $4.00/ hr more in my last job in AZ (but you can make it up with OT or working weekends/nights). But I am very happy here!!!...I also think that rent is more expensive, we are renting a 3BR house at a nice neighborhood for $1650.00/month. However, you are NOT going to have any problems finding a nurse job here, I had multiple offers from different hospitals even before I moved. If you decide to continue as an ICU nurse, Florida Hospital & Orlando Health offer great sign-on bonuses for ICU/ER/Trauma nurses. I received one but not as good as the ICU/ER nurses :-). Good luck.
