I'd be more concerned with the people in the Orlando area than I would the nature. I have lived in various parts of north and central Florida for 20+ years and have never seen a black widow or poisonous snakes. Surprisingly, I saw a large timber rattler when I lived in NH. The only times I have seen alligators were on the golf course and they are afraid of people.

When I read the thread subject black widow I thought it was referring to women preying upon the rich retired elderly men in FL.

I wouldn't worry too much about black widows. They stay out of the way, like snakes, and it's doubtful you'll find one unless you go looking for one. They like to stay in crevices, nooks, and crannies that are unused. If an area hasn't been used in a while and has stored material or tools and such in it, you may want to use caution. But as far as one just crawling up on you out in the yard or in the house, you're about as likely to step on a snake - which is also highly unlikely. Just use common sense.

Thank you so much for all of your replies. I really had this vision of these things biting me and my kids while we sleep or crawling around on my living room floor...lol It sounds like they prefer to stay away from us. I am wondering if plastic totes would help keep them out of my storage items(such as holiday decorations). Thank you so much!!

I don't know if it will deter the spiders by keeping things in totes but after we moved, everything we still had left in shipping boxes we switched over to totes. Cardboard does attract things such as roaches and silverfish. We are keeping Rubbermaid in business LOL

Black Widows are not a constant threat, but to be able to recognize one is a good thing. teach your kids respect of nature and educate them of the things that are poisonous... I bet they will be fascinated. Black Widows and Brown recluses are best avoided, Coral snakes as well. I'm yet to see one here but I will know when I do.

Education doesn't hurt anyone, ignorance does.

I agree, excellent tip! Little known fact, roaches are also drawn not only to the cardboard boxes but the glue on the packing tape which I guess they find tasty. Getting rid of all of that stuff they find attractive will go a long way to keeping them out of your garage and attic.

Hi, I have been holidaying here in Florida (Davenport) for the last few days. Last night on our return I saw a rather large black spider with red markings on its abdomen, in the garage, near some plastic boxes which has kids toys stowed. The owners of this villa have turned their garage into a playroom, so I would imagine this needs reporting pretty soon?
