Please don't let the news media taint your view of Sanford. Like all towns everywhere it has to good parts and bad parts.

What part of the city will you be working in? The city is very spread out so knowing this and how far you're willing to commute will help us give you a good area. Budget would be good to know also.

I love Maitland but there are a whole lot more great areas out there.
I agree, not every part of Sanford is bad. A good part of it is fine. I live near there and go there all the time. I don't feel threatened at all. The schools are fine if your child is into band, the IB program, medical program, etc. Keep in mind, just because you live in Sanford, doesn't mean your child has to go to Sanford schools either. There are choices they call it.

Actually, there are decent amount of blacks in certain areas.

We have two boys (15 and 13), so I'm assuming that Sanford isn't the best place for young black males to grow up at?
I assure you more young black males have been killed where the victim was from (Miami Gardens) than in Sanford. The worst place for a young black male to grow up is, statistically speaking, are areas with large numbers of other young black males.

I would think schools would be the first priority. Don't buy, but rent for at least six months to get a good look around the city and surrounding area. The FCAT's/School rating system is being revised to give a more accurate picture and from the sound of it many schools might be downgraded. Then you have to find an affordable, but home with potential to increase in value. UCF is really growing and your children might attend that school so a place that is near there might be a good idea too. I would think the more largely black communities would not be a good choice due to high crime and poor schools.

I think that alone would ex Florida as choice for a place to live for me. If I had kids of course. Florida as one absolute worst education system in this country. A good private school would be your best choice.

This is what I mean about people in Florida. What about the inept and all out criminal Police department? Have you been watching the news for the last 3 weeks??

Nothing is preventing parents from stepping in and providing education as well. Many people throughout the country, and world, have gone to bad schools and made out just fine.

One or a few incidents are exceptions, not rules, unless now we want to assign the exceptions as a rule? Thus creating more than a stereotype, but a fact? I think many groups in the US would object to such methodology. The entire police department is not inept or criminal, you think every member of the department had authority on this Sanford shooting case?

A black family is statistically better off in Sanford than say in New Orleans, or Detroit.

This is not the first recent issue involving racial issues in Sanford. The last police chief ended up resigning when it came out that his teenage son and friends beat up a homeless black man for "fun".

Only because they were stupid enough to film it and that it went viral was anything done about it. No arrests were even going to be made until it went on the Internet.

Depending on where the OP is from coming in contact with good ole boy rednecks may not be what they want.

And not knowing how this current issue is going to turn out and what ramifications may come because of it, might be best to look at other areas.

Which is the fault of the Florida Legislature....

On topic: Central Florida is not the hellhole the media is currently depicting it to be. You will be fine, even if you were to rent/buy in Sanford.

Exactly. And now we get to hear from all the experts who never set foot in the town telling the world Sanford is comprised solely of rednecks dressed in white robes driving gun rack-equipped pick-up trucks with a rear bed full of wooden crosses to set fire to.
