Check out South Lake County. It is about 45 mintues to both Winter Haven and Orlando with excellent schools, just now building up with restaraunts, banks, malls, etc. Nice place to live. I am telling you this so you can check around with local law enforcement or the school boards and get the information on your own. If you are interested in this area I am selling a 4 bed house pre forclosure because my son is in the hospital an hour away from us in the Clermont Area. It is appraised at 240,000 last year and we are willing to quick sell it or listing price is 214,900 now. This is the information on it.

I would live in Winter Haven if I had a choice of any city in Florida. They have a small city infrastructure, restaurants, gyms, etc. My cousin and I received a great public school education growing up there and both of us have advanced degrees and are successful now.

If my spouse worked in Lakeland and I in Orlando, I would look at Davenport. Two of my co-workers live in Davenport and they recommend the Four Corners Charter School. It is not like the old days when you had to drive 30 minutes for groceries--that area now has infrastructure from the ChampionsGate area, Reunion, South Clermont, I-4 and 27 plazas popping up. If you get a chance, try the Italian and French restaurants at ChampionsGate. We used to live near Davenport and would eat at La Crepe and Pepperon's frequently.

We have Friends that live in Lakeland , and some parts are really nice, as with any LArger City it has its bad areas and Crime...Our Firends live Right off I4 in North Lakeland and they love it.. there are so many nice homes over that way , they say that the traffic during the week can be a bear tho...but im sure its no worse then any other larger city..but Not as bad as Orlando and Kissimmee..

Lake Wales is country but very friendly people. Anything south of Orlando is not good. North Orlando is better. Lakeland would be closer and is really pretty. Lakeland would be better place for your wife. There are some big companies there. Publix, Watkins/FedX or Cardinal Health. I can't stand Polk county in general but if there is one city in Polk if I were forced to stay, it would be Lakeland eventhough the city screwed it's residence on the whole utility thing. Good luck to you and your family. Most working class people I know from the Midwest usually leave with in 5 years. We did and I'm glad to be out.

could you tell me what happened in lakeland with the utility issue and how does it affect the utility bill? thank you.

Way to go AJ67!! I just moved from SOUTH Orlando (yes, SOUTH) to Winter Haven for my husband's job & I am very happy here. When I first moved to Florida over 6 years ago (from NY), I settled in prestigous Winter Park. I never felt so afraid for my life while living in Winter Park & I came from NY.
I then moved to South Orlando (Hunters Creek) which felt like fairy-tale land. It truly was a beautiful place to live and raise a family. Nice, neat neighborhoods (tough homeowners assoc) and excellent schools. Only moved away because my husband had to drive 80 miles to work every day.
I've been in Winter Haven just over a month and I'm no stranger to Polk County. Yes, Polk is certainly more of a rural area but it does have alot of charm, Winter Haven especially. I would prefer Winter Haven (even w/ its snowbirds) over Lakeland, just didn't like what I saw there. If you like a country/rural atmosphere, Polk County is the place for you.

Im glad you like Winter Haven, I wish we could seel our house because we would move out that way in a heart beat!...

Winter Haven, Lake Wales, Lakeland... it is all very nice. I get the papers and we have friends in the police force and it is not horrible like the poster makes it out to be. I'm sorry that she had problems here. I don't think anyone in Winter Haven cares if you are black dating white, etc. And I've been here for six years.

I wouldn't move to the Four Corner's area. It is a lot of new subdivisions without a town... seems lonely.

The traffic has been bad in polk county lately, as all the roads are undergoing widening. The have finished a lot of projects and it is getting better.

Check out downtown: Winter Haven, Lakeland and Lake Wales. All have beautiful towns. K

ok, Devenport has only one road to get out to Orlando and Winter Haven, and is 17/92 very busy road one lane traffic each way, so if you don't mind taking one hour drive to and from work, may be more, if you were transfer to Winter Haven, jest look at a place close by to rent or buy, all do I will not recomend to buy a propery right now in florida, they are way over priced, considering how much you get pay for any work you do here in Florida, houses can be over 150,000.00, just wait one more year you'll see houses in that price. Just rent a propery and choose a place where there are good schools for your children.
