I would check out the Narcossee Rd./Lake Nona area since its an upcoming area with new schools and there is a new Medical school and the Burnham Institute that will be built there soon. Its also close to the airport. There's no shortage of new home communities here. The property taxes are high here but no state income tax and really I'd rather have no state income tax. You can check out the schools at greatschools.net

Im not sure what your price range is, but we also used to live in Castle Rock, CO. We now live in Satellite Beach. Satellite Beach/Melbourne Beach area is 1 hour from Orlando. The public schools "beachside" where we live are excellent...very small class sizes. Low crime...very wonderful area just blocks from the beach. Another one of my favorite areas if I had to be about 15 minutes from Orlando would be Winter Park. It is a beautiful area near downtown Orlando and the schools there are also very good. Good luck with your decision.

Your husband working in law enforcement will be good for him since Florida is really busy with crime. I guess that is one good thing. If he wants to stay busy then Orlando would be it for sure. He will do well. If you worry about him a lot then Orlando would not be the place. Too many police officers getting hurt. I wish you luck for sure and hope your enjoy it here. There are some good things you just have to find them. Areas I would recommend would be outside of Orlando somewhere. If you don't want to drive then maybe Winter Park. It is hard to say since the crime is everywhere right now. I will look around and see what I can find for you. A private school might be better. I wish you luck.

just some ideas:
-if your husband works in law enforcement he should ask the people he will be working with (if he knows who they are) and ask them where is a safe good easy communte place to live.
-you can look at winter garden, windermere, winter park- just ones that i read about.
-best thing to do also is search this forum, lots of people ask where is a safe place to live with children. You'll know which areas are best based on the # of people that suggest it & if the school system is rated high.

good luck

Thanks for the advise. No worries about NY/NJ folks both my husband and sister-in-law are both from NJ. My husband has been out of NJ for 16 years I think I washed most of the rudeness out of him.

Like others have said above, Lake Nona area is right near the airport, All new construction, All A+ rated schools, except the high school, however their is a new high school being build and should be completed in the next year.

Oviedo/Winter Springs also sounds like the perfect area for you. Seminole county schools are excellent, and there are some very nice new construction homes available. You can also easily access the 417 which almost never has any traffic on it, with easy access to the airport.

Hunters Creek area, and Dr. Phillips area may also be places you want to check out.

If you need any help, there are quite a few Realtors on the site that are more than qualified....including myself

The Dr. Phillips area is very nice. Good school system too. Also, you might try the Windemere section, (a little west of Orlando.) I don't know what your pocket book allows. Both areas are upscale, but probably well worth it, especially if you have children. My first choice would be Dr. Phillips. The schools are second to none and it's near Universal Studios. The kids would like that too.
