The Dr. Phillips area is very nice. Good school system too. Also, you might try the Windemere section, (a little west of Orlando.) I don't know what your pocket book allows. Both areas are upscale, but probably well worth it, especially if you have children. My first choice would be Dr. Phillips. The schools are second to none and it's near Universal Studios. The kids would like that too.

Look in the Narcoossee/Moss Park area. It depends if your kids are in elementary, middle or HS. New high school coming in 2009, new elementary just opened this august at North Shore at Lake Hart and North Lake Park has an A rated elementary; Odyssey MS is an A Rated school. This is 7 miles from Orlando International (MCO) and adjacent to the 417 and the 528.

I live in North Shore at Lake Hart and this is a big airport community, plus plenty of Air Marshalls, Secret Service, Orlando PD and Orange County Sheriffs, plus plenty of retired officers from all over live here. Plenty of homes with Police cars in their driveways. There are homes in the $200+ to well over a million dollars. Depends what you want. There is even a brand new home (no one has ever lived in it), beautiful 2 story on a pond and in bank foreclosure. |

I'm sure you're already looking....but....
I saw Dr Phillip's...that's a good area... Ocoee and Winter Garden also have a lot of new constuction and there are a lot of officers living there. Clermont is also very popular with law enforcement. It would also be easier on you getting to Tampa if need be than any of the suggestions for the northern areas. I also agree to have your husband ask his local coworkers what work for them. What area of town he gets assigned might have an impact on where you choose also. Good luck in your search!! |

Are you flying out of Orlando or Tampa? Where is your husbands office. That will make a big difference.
You will find everything is fairly new and the old houses you may be use to are few and far between. Old in Florida generally means 1960's Most area's have an excellent selection of nice newer homes. Driving can be a factor as traffic tends to be busy in some area's. Schools are for the most part excellent. I grew up in Wisconsin and have fond memories but would never go back. My children are Floridians and it has been great. As much as I love Co. I think you will find Florida is a real adventure and a super place to raise your family. I would suggest talking with your Florida local church members, friends, family, employers, to get personal insight as to the area's to avoid. You may consider contacting realtors to have them send you some relo packets just for fun. I personally built in Lake Mary and loved it until I decided I needed to move to the country. We built in a rural setting in Saint Cloud and love it. Every day is like a mini vacation and it is tough to beat the variations of cultures and enviroments. These people are very nice and the cost of living is reasonable. It is fun to live in Florida, best of luck, if you are going to be in the Orlando area let me know and I will send you some specific examples of options for wonderful area's to raise your family. Since you are forced to move to Orlando due to your husbands job in law enforcement. Go figure.....Orlando the dumping ground of crime - I feel safer in Manhattan at 3am alone in the street waving a hundred dollar bill in my hand.
First stay away from Orange County - lack of mgmt, organization , planning, you will be freaked when you see it. Seminole Cty isn't too bad, Ovieda in particular seems to have it together. The Narcoosee area is about to skyrocket in growth over the next 4 years, but not a bad area. If I had to do it all over again....it wouldn't be here - too redneck, too clueless, no wonder Disney is totally on it's own. |

"too redneck"
hahaha. your kiddin right? the last thing orlando has too much of is rednecks. how about all the rude ny'ers/nj'ians? puerto-ricans? rich white folks from up north that think they are better than the natives? some ppl here think orlando is beverly hills. please. rich ppl acting like they are better than others. "oh, me, i live in windermere" or wherever. please. this is orlando. there is nothing great about this place. |

When you move here, try renting for 1 year in a new community that is convenient to your husbands work. You will need several months to figure the part of town you wish to live in. The real estate market is in decline now, and will be retreating for at least one to two more years. There's no need now to make a purchase, because from a buyer's perspective, the market is getting better by the day. Take your time, learn the area, then buy.
