A UK friend is in ther middle of a 16 day vacation in Orlando (staying in a rented house) and his 4 year old daughter has caught some kind of cold or allergy. She's not wheezing, but is coughing up "orange" phlegm.

He was wondering if any of the local pharmacies have a "doc in the box" (medic on the premesis), and would his UK government health insurance work there if needed?

Anybody have experience with this? Thanks.

My experience in this case is reversed (I was in the UK, child became ill). Call a walk-in and ask about the insurance. If they won't accept it, your friend can probably take her there for a low price ($100 or less). They may reduce it even more (a friend of mine from another state was visiting and had no money, the clinic she went to reduced her fee from 110 to 40 dollars. Not sure which clinic).

Also, if she is given an antibiotic, you can fill those at some pharmacies for free (Publix) or cheap (Target).

CVS drug stores have a Minute Clinic, where you can get minor things looked at on a walk in basis. I doubt they will take UK insurance, so he would probably have to pay for the visit and any prescriptions.

There are many "doc in a box" places around. Minute Clinic at CVS is one. Anything with "urgent care" in the name should do. From talking to other Brits, I don't think your NHS will pay for care outside of the UK, but if they have secondary insurance then that may. Even still, most urgent care places will be less than $150 for a doctor visit. Call around to find a good rate. The hotel concierge can probably help if they are at a hotel with one, or at the very least the front desk clerks may be able to assist in finding one.

Prescriptions can be expensive. If your friends' daughter needs to get one filled, I'd recommend Walmart. They will fill most generic prescriptions for $4 without insurance. Places like CVS can charge upward of $50 for the same thing depending on the drug.

No, they won't take the NHS. He will have to pay out of pocket, basic visit will be about $80 plus the costs of any tests and medications.

Many CVS and Walgreens stores have walk-in clinics, otherwise try CentraCare which are located all over the area.
