What about the Citrus Cove area(Alpert Drive)? Is that an okay area? Or are there any okay areas in Orlando itself? Maybe I have to be in the suburbs?

You haven't insulted me. I think we are coming from different directions. I have worked for over 30 years to get to where I am....it didn't come easily. Now I am approaching retirement. But you are young.

I understand from your posts that you haven't had an easy life, BUT I truly believe that you will be stronger in the end for it. Don't give up. Keep working and believing in yourself. Try to build a network from work, church, school, friends etc. You may have been born poor, but you can rise above it. I am proof of that. I grew up in a small town in SC from a family that came from sharecroppers. I'm certainly not rich, but I have been blessed. I believe God helped me, but I also helped myself by working hard, getting an education, putting myself in environments to meet people and giving 110% at every job I ever had.

That area is THE pits. You will be across the street from gangland.

Do NOT move to that area. Trust me, I grew up in Orlando and that area is disgusting and unsafe!

Yes, I recommend the suburds in Seminole County.

Try these areas:

Maitland
Lake Mary
Heathrow (expensive as heck, though)
Winter Springs
Tuskawilla
Longwood (very nice and not too far from Orlando)
Windermere (expensive)
Dr. Philips area

Sadly the "nice areas" in Orlando are fewer and fewer. Crime is creeping up everywhere in O-town and the cost of living is going up SO fast, wages are NOT keeping up. The job market for anything paying more than $8.50/h will be brutal, so you better have an outstanding resume and LOTS of luck!

Honestly, I cannot see WHY you would leave TX for FL. A lot of my family is leavingCentral FL for places like TX, CO, AZ, SC and NC because the cost of living in orlando is insane and the good jobs are way too few. Too many people, too few jobs. Most new jobs are at Mickey-Ds, gas stations, and (yuck) Disney, a horrible employer that pays close to nothing. Forget the cheap housing you are used to in TX; homes in the Orlando ghettos are still selling for a good $220,000. That is for a disgusting area. Rent is through the freakin' roof, I kid you not.

Make sure you do your homework B4 moving to Orlando.

Nirvana,
How's Colorado treating you? It is a wonderful state. If I didn't live in Florida - it would be high on my choice list. DH and I may consider it for retirement -depending on where our son ends up settling.

The food (Mexican and bbq) and housing prices here are fantastic. My husband, truth be known had gotten tired of the illiteracy, the pollution, and the crazy way Houstonians drive. When we were in Orlando on vacation in July, we were impressed by the clean air (Houston's full of refineries). Also, the people on the roads were much more courteous and civilized than what we were used to here. We've been wanting to get out of Texas for a while, and a job transfer became available, so my husband took it. Hopefully it'll work out fine.

Poodlestix, if your husband is working at OIA, it should be a no brainer for you. Look at realtor dot com for homes in the zip code areas of 32827, 23828 and 32829. These are Waterford Lakes, Vista Lakes, Lake Nona and surrounding communities. They are all relatively new, safe and very close to the airport. You will have good schools nearby as well. You will find homes in Lake Nona from about $250,000 and up, homes in Waterford starting around $200,000 and homes in Vista Lakes/Tivoli Woods/Preserve communities starting around $240,000 and up. However, be prepared, even with the 'bubble' housing prices here are much higher than Texas. The homes at the low end of the above pricing will be around 1500 - 1800 square feet, but a newer (5 years or less) home.

There are also many homes for rent in these communities and that would probably be the best way to go right now, until you get to know the area better.
