Default Orlando Safe From Elephants

This town is a little weird, but really ... elephants? The local radio stations are having a field day with this news.

Just to clarify, this article has to do with the local sheriff's office purchase of 14 elephant guns ...

From the Orlando Sentinel ...

Quote:
Orlando is safe from rampaging pachyderms now that the Orange County Sheriff's Office has bought 14 elephant guns.

The newest weapon in Sheriff Kevin Beary's armory fires a half-inch-diameter bullet with sharpshooter accuracy.

"The sole purpose for this weapon is large or exotic animals," sheriff's spokesman Jim Solomons said Thursday.

Default Post it all

"Each .499-caliber Alexander Arms Beowulf rifle has a laser sight to let shooters hit where they aim out to 300 yards -- a perfect tool to help the agriculture and marine unit deal with cattle that wander onto the BeachLine Expressway and Florida's Turnpike.

But the Sheriff's Office also is thinking bigger.

Orlando's theme parks are home to elephants, polar bears, lions, giraffes and hippos. Should any of them get loose, deputies need the right weapon to stop them if public safety is threatened, Solomons said."

Post the rest of the article, not just the part that makes OCSO looks like a bunch of idiots.

Sorry ... didn't mean to mislead, just wanted to link to an interesting article, which in itself had some humor ...

Anyway, why are they shooting cattle that wander onto the road ... seems like that would cause more of a problem than just getting them to go back into the fields ... then again, I've never dealt with an animal that big ...

Finally ... just to include the really interesting bits ...

Quote:
Orange County's toughest neighborhoods may not have elephants, but the deputies who work there are getting a shipment of 25-shot machine pistols.

"Matching firepower," said sheriff's spokesman Capt. Mark Strobridge, when asked why.
Just so people know, I find it hard to believe that all of this goes on in a town where I've lived for over 20+ years without issue. There are definitely areas within and around the city (basically, the majority of Orlando) that are completely safe and are great towns to live in ...
