as far as ppl being polite and nice, nc is miles ahead of fla. we are the ny of the south.
I think if you want to be polite and it's in your nature, you will be so no matter where you are. The same goes in reverse.

but why then does fla have so many rude and self-centered folks and nc doesnt have nearly the same amount? there are a lot of floridians in nc, but many of them are the nice, good, down to earth natives that just wanted to get out of fla b/c of what it has become.

surely, we are a "northern" state ppl-wise, it just so happens that we are in the south. i have found southern folks to be far more friendly than northerners (in general) and maybe that's why THERE IS a pretty big difference b/w fla and nc

My area is very "northeastern" and "Latin American" in demographic and in general they seem to act like how you describe the natives. Not saying that is true everywhere, even in my own county. We just have a good local neighborhood here. On the contrary, many transplants fit the exact description of what you have described the natives because of what Florida has become, and find themselves wanting to leave because many areas in the state do indeed attract a self centered, self insular individual, and folks find out they end up making a big mistake because believe it or not, people don't actually act like this up north. They act different for sure, and maybe the "rude" factor is in some areas (definitely in Long Island, I hate going to Smithtown for that reason), but as in any other geography, you have areas where people are as you describe (Rude, self centered) and areas where people are pretty nice, and they do tend to cluster up in certain areas whether they be big areas (like Central Florida for the rude folks) or small areas (like my general neighborhood for decent folks).

Backtofla, why don't you move back to Seminole County? In my opinion it's a different world out there (especially Oviedo and much of Winter Springs) and since you like Florida that would just be a good move. I think the people are pretty nice out there and they also tend to have middle-aged Midwestern transplants, who are a pretty down-to-earth bunch.

It may be a combination of upbringing, of subserviency, of preservation, of history, of "majority" (things rub off), etc.

Where is the person who stopped for the woman from?

Personally, I was raised in NY by Cuban parents, went to school and college in NYC, moved to FL 11 years ago, live amongst the road rage, criminals, illegal aliens, and all that other sort of invasionist crap, and I would stop to let someone through. I use my blinkers and I let people in front of me in traffic.

yeah and maybe i might have gotten a wave but its rare......usually u let someone cross here and they just walk across like they own the road....and before i let that lady cross i was actually pulling out of a gas station and the guy at the other pump was leaving at the same time, and he actually smiled and waved that i could go first ......so those series of things showed me that people are friendlier overall outside of Orlando.....i havent had 2 things in a row happen before that or after that while living in Orlando....i might get one nice thing every once and a while but its really hard ...people are scared to look other people in the eye down here.....its kind of like Miami here.....Please take a trip up to Tennessee and as soon as you get to the state border and even in Georgia in most parts people know that the left lane is the fast lane....its amazing the difference....i just think alot of people are used to things here and have family in town here and so they have to defend Orlando....and i respect that pride....but i have really seen a difference here in the last couple years......

we arent saying all northerners fit the bill of being rude......i think its just a difference in the way people do things.......someone can let me go in front of them in traffic but down here they will have that look like "hurry up" instead of being genuine about letting me cut in front....i dont drive like an old lady so i know that there is an impatience thing going on with alot of people here.......i would rather wait at the 4 way stop then let someone let me cut out if they have a look on thier face like why iam i taking too long when they let me out

I've been around the States and other countries. It's all up to each individual. Either you want to be nice and/or reciprocate, or you're made of some other gunk.

Amen vpcats! I've lived in both places(Florida and N.C.) and and been to another country also and there's good and kind and bad and evil everywhere. It's not the place that make people who they are-they would be that way no matter where they lived.

I agree that it is NOT the same here as anywhere .....I would love to see what age groups that the people are who are posting things on this thread so that i can get a sense of what kind of lifestyle you are living in Orlando....maybe its different for some people because they have a different lifestyle that doesnt allow them to be subjected to all the rude behavior we are talking about.....who knows....all i know is that i really CAN tell a BIG difference from here and Tennessee and some other places ive been....ill even put San Fransisco in the mix because i stayed there for a year or two and it was alot bigger than Orlando but everyone for the most part had better attitudes.......
