still the place to be if you want to live in FL though, along with Jax

Orlando’s rate stack up pretty well against other Florida cities, although it is still above the nation’s unemployment rate of 8.3 percent. Jacksonville ranked No. 66 – the lowest unemployment rate (9 percent) among the Florida metros listed – and was the only city to outrank Orlando.

Sarasota/Bradenton and Miami tied for No. 74, both with an unemployment rate of 9.3 percent. Tampa (9.4 percent) had the 77th lowest rate, followed by Melbourne (9.7 percent) at No. 82 and Lakeland (10.6 percent) at No. 91.
Of course, you could always move to North Dakota

Sure if you want to deal with -50+ below zero winters and live in Sh*t Stain, North Dakota. Although I hear those oil rig guys are making 6 figures

And to the other poster who mentioned Omaha? I wonder what industries they have in NE besides corn

Omaha is the corporate headquarters for Berkshire Hathaway, parent company of GEICO and other insurance/annuity companies. The CEO is billionaire Warren Buffet who resides in Omaha. It's also home to a major brokerage firm (TD Ameritrade) ConAgra (major agricultural company), Union Pacific Company, Mutual of Omaha and the Gallup organization (The Gallup Poll). It hosts the College World Series every year (NCAA Div I Baseball) and is frequently the site of Olympic Trials (Swimming). The city has been trending less than 5% unemployment for the past few years and growing in leaps/bounds...with not a cornfield in site.

No surprised or shocks here that Florida did not fair well. We are still too one dimensional as an economy. National downturns hit us especially hard since no one is able to come visit us. That being said, I do like what is being done to bring in more types of industries and diversify our economy but there's clearly more work to be done.

I disagree that no one can come visit us, because we just became the first city to welcome 55 million people in one year which puts us above pre-recession levels. There has to be something more to it than just that.

I live in NJ where the maximum unemployment you can receive is just over $550.00 a week. A friend of mine was just let go from her job in Florida, and told me the maximum you can receive in that state is just over $250. a week.

How do people survive there ?? WOW. I realize the lost of living is cheaper, that's just insane to me ...
