I have a car that's a "toy." I haven't been driving it much, but I don't want to sell it.

It's paid for, I have clear title.

The insurance is running me about $150/month, mostly collision and liability. I have shopped around, that's a good rate for a convertible sports car.

I'm considering taking it off the road for the next six months.

Here are my questions...

1. I know I can keep the car without it being registered (it's garaged.) If I choose to do this, do I have to turn in the tags, and if I do, what is it going to cost me to put it back on the road in the spring? Can I tell them to "suspend/cancel" the registration but keep the tags? I know some states will allow you to do this with motorcycles in the winter.

2. I know I need to ask my insurance agent to get a firm answer, but has anyone been allowed to keep comp on their car to cover it for theft or a chunk of blue ice crashing through the hood while you're washing it in the driveway while not insuring it for liability and collision?

Other than my daily driver, I have 2 "toy" cars classified (to the insurance company) as show cars, meaning they're not daily drivers and used only to be driven to car shows. One is a Mustang and the other a kit/replica, and both together cost me ~$500/yr total for full coverage, stated-value insurance.

This is specifically with a company that does collector/show/kit-car insurance, such as Grundy, Hagerty, American Hobbyist, etc. Some impose limits of 2000 miles per year or thereabouts. You'd need to explain why yours in a show car though.

The Mustang has not driven in a few years and has not been registered in Florida since I moved here a few plus years ago, which I understand is not a problem as long as it's not parked on the street etc. I'd think (guessing) that if you let your registration lapse, they'd charge you the late fee (like $20?) when you eventually re-register it. Call a DMV office for the official on this.

I've also heard (unofficially) that the PIP/PD from my other regular insurance company for my daily driver should apply to the show cars, so it's prob possible to get comp only if that's true.

Thanks, but it's not a show car and there's no way I could talk them into believing it is--even though I haven't put 600 miles on it this year.

Call them and see. Tell them it's being taken out of commission to be built as a show car.
