It seems like all the negativity on this Orlando forum by certain individuals, you know who they are, is counter productive. They are knowingly or unknowingly scaring off a lot of good people who could potentially make Orlando a better place to live, for everyone. If only they put the same amount of effort into community initiatives they might begin to see the change they are looking for in others. In essence, "be the change you want to see in the world".
In my humble opinion Florida is a beautiful State and one of the best places to live in the U.S., despite what some/few have to say. |

The things that are wrong with Orlando can not be solved by good people coming here. More good (or bad) people coming in will not increase the wages or make living here more affordable. Poverty breeds crime. We have a LOT of needy folks here mostly because of the disparity in wages vs cost of living. Period.

I agree with you 100%. I've enjoyed almost every minute I've spent here since returning from the service. After traveling the world for ten years, I knew the place I enjoyed the most was Orlando. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have. |

Welcome to Florida!!!!!!!!!
I moved here from New England in 1990, and I have been super happy. I live right in between the attractions and the beach, and it is the perfect suburb for us! |

I just don't think this is true of Orlando. Tampa, Jacksonville, WPB, Fort Lauderdale and their surrounding areas, as well as many smaller Florida towns are fantastic places to live. Tampa is just the right balance of city and the laid back, with some nice historical architecture in many areas. Jacksonville offers a low cost of living coupled with a good climate and diversifying economy. West Palm Beach area offers some great culture and nice spots to locate and a low level of traffic congestion. Fort Lauderdale is a great place to network and socialize, where cultural diversity is coexisting with assimilation into the U.S culture in a way that is very unique, as well as offering quality cultural outlets and some very nice suburbs. The smaller cities throughout the state, like Gainesville and St. Augustine, or coastal towns in the Panhandle speak for themselves. What does Orlando and its surrounding area offer that is unique? Aside from the theme parks, I think the best thing it offers is Seminole County, which is a good, albeit bland place to raise children. In my opinion, the negative really outweighs the positive in the Orlando area between its obscene traffic (worse than Miami in my experiences),crap-tastic (I love that word) minimum wage economy, poorly planned sprawl, lack of culture, high crime rate, high cost of living, tense racial relations, and transient nature. It's not as bad as some people make it out to be, but I just don't see the appeal. Last edited by compelled to reply; 10-13-2007 at 11:05 PM.. |

How will more clueless people make Orlando a better place? Will a few more clueless folks from Joysey help make it any better? I just don't see how.
Central Florida has big problems caused by a lack of political leadership and vision for the area beyond what is good for big business. The government here genuinely doesn't care about people as people, but only as wage slaves for the corporations and their interests. Progress is defined as "growth", not quality of life. Living in the CF area is fundamentally dehumanizing. I would leave this craphole but I have no money to leave. I'm stuck here. |
