My husband and I are planning on visiting Orlando in August to check out the area and see where we would eventually want to live. Any recommendations on hotels we should stay? We plan on driving around Windermere, Dr Phillips and Winter park. Possibly Hunters creek and Lake Nona. Also any places we should eat at as well while visiting?

You can find some great deals on hotels around International Drive and Seaworld. These locations are also quit central to the areas you mentioned. I would book through hotwire.

To get a true sense of the area I would recommend not staying near the tourist attractions. You mentioned Winter Park as a possibility and would suggest the Best Western Mt Vernon Inn which is a clean, well kept property on US 17-92 in a safe area with easy access to I-4. There are a number of good restaurants nearby as well. Check out the Ravenous Pig (GastroPub), El Bodegon(Spanish/Tapas), Bosphorous (Turkish) or Luma (New American).

You didn't discuss your budget, but I would either stay at the Grand Bohemian downtown or the hotel above Park Plaza Gardens on Park Ave in Winter Park. I definitely wouldn't stay down near the attractions. Then again, I'm not a huge fan of the neighborhoods down near the attractions either.

Since you're primarily focusing on south Orlando neighborhoods, I think one of the hotels down there would be your best bet. Drury Inn is supposedly nice for an inexpensive hotel and is in Dr. Phillips, or if you have a bigger budget you could stay at the lodge at the country club at Bay Hill, one of Dr. Phillips' nicest neighborhoods and is only a couple minutes from Windermere as well.

Drury is in a great location. Brand new too. I hear good things about it

There are some very nice areas of Maitland you should look at too.
