Hello,

I'm 23 and possibly relocating to Orlando (Summer/Fall 2014) for Graduate Studies at UCF. I was wondering what are the best areas for a young professional?

Budget
$800 per month (solo). However, I might snag a roommate from Tampa to relocate with me so we could afford a downtown loft or "trendy" neighborhood.

Desires:
-Walkability, short commute to campus, near nightlife/bars/cafes.
-Safety/Diversity

Otherwise, I'm looking forward to this next phase of my life and hope to become a Knight!

Congrats man!! Orlando is a great city, lots of young adults and good nightlife/entertainment.. Apartments in Downtown can be on the expensive side but if you go with a roommate it is most definetly doable and worth it for the urban vibe, Lake Eola/Thornton Park is a good neighborhood in downtown with lots of restaurants/bars, nightclubs are nearby within walking distance.. If you decide to live in downtown, it is only about a 15-30 minute drive (depending on traffic) from UCF main campus to the east via 408.. Depending on your program and degree, UCF also has a satelitte center in downtown..

Another option is to live in or near the campus, that is if you are looking for more of a "college feel" just keep in mind that mostly undergrads live on campus.. I believe there is also a limited amount of graduate housing available on campus, check with your program and the on-campus housing office.

There are also nice areas in between downtown and UCF campus; Baldwin Park just northeast of downtown and Waterford Lakes just south of UCF.. Best of luck!

There's tons of apartments for anything and all UCF-related up and down Alafaya Trail..just take a stab at any of them. The newer, nicer ones will obviously be more expensive, while the older, more run down will be cheaper. That's your best bet if you're trying to stay close to the campus. And there's tons of dive/college bars around there.

At 23 I would go with Thornton Park over the UCF area if you can get that roomate. The downtown nightlife is far superior to the UCF area and caters mostly to 20-somethings.

I agree... go for Thornton Park if you can swing the $$. Try Post Parkside. Rent is just as high as elsewhere, but if you move into the tower, most of your utilities are included (which is not the case in other buildings).

Thornton Park is nice don't get me wrong, and I enjoy it a whole hell of a lot better than the UCF area myself, but I'm pretty positive if he goes the solo route he's definitely not going to be able to afford it (with the roommate, I guess he could)..but it's also not a "short" commute to the main campus either. I know, not on the other side of town by any means..but it's definitely not short.
