I'm originally from the DC area and I currently live an area in Md that has seen a big spike in crime. I'm fully aware that there's no place in this country that has NO crime...I just don't want to feel like I need bars on my windows or that I need to keep my children indoors. Or that I'll be mugged or car jacked. A lot of that is common sense stuff. Don't hang out on the ghetto and watch where you go and with whom at night, which is what people should do no matter where they live.

Not moving to Florida is not optional, lol.

Crime is high in certain areas a considerable distance from where you wold choose to live and are overwhelmingly contained to those areas. The entire western half of Sanford (beyond the 417) is as safe as Lake Mary.
Yea...I was looking at the demographics the other day and they're much like where I'm at now. The Latino population is slightly higher but that's increasing everywhere. Still, it's nice to know that being bilingual isn't a mandatory skill.

What city will you be working in?

Apopka is not bad but I would look for something on the Seminole County side instead of the Orange County side.

Best of luck with your move!

Insurance rates...hadn't thought about that. At this point, I'd be applying for a teaching position with Seminole County in October. I figured I'd look for places close to wherever I got hired, but I'm hoping to land something in Sanford, Altamonte Springs (on the Seminole Co. side), or Longwood. Apopka is another option, though not my first. Winter Park seems expensive; I don't want to stay broke paying for housing.

I've only visited the Orlando area a few times but I have lots of incentive to move there. A couple more visits should help me narrow things down.

My sister recently told me that she'd love to come with, so that helps, but she's a GNA here. Would she have much success finding similar work down there? (She's prepared to do something else, but she really does want to continue doing what she does now.)
