My grandparents live on the highly populated Chain of Lakes in Winter Haven. The "alligators are afraid of populated areas, noise, etc" is not the reality. Their neighbors across the lake lost their 2 year old to a gater. Like another poster said, if you have something larger than a puddle, they are attracted to it, and likely in it.

If I lived in Florida I would spend a lot of time swimming. IN THE OCEAN.
I have been in Florida many times and I would never swim in any fresh water ever.

Wakeboard sure, but can they swim for shore? Jump off the dock? Im guessing not. Thanks.
Its not an activity that I would recommend.

Here is some good information about those amebas that will put this in perspective. It is from the FL Dept. Of Health.

Im seeing a lot of post about bacteria infested waters in Orlando. Where is all of this bacteria coming from? Have many people actually died from these amoebas? Curious what is the history behind these tales.

Too hot and pretty lawns. The run off is making the lakes toxic. I know one water ski guy died off the 528 few years ago. I believe when you do get it it's flesh eating bacteria. I suggest you check with news and websites even life guard before entering any water. Sea lice - sharks - sting rays. You just have to be aware!! The heat and pollution thing is messing a lot up.

I grew up in south Louisiana and lived in close proximity to gators and moccasins. I prefer the lakes and rivers in the PNW that are freezing which I hate but at least there's not creatures that will eat you or poison you to death in the water.

It's brain-eating. It ****s you up. Yes, it's here. Most locals know not to swim long-term in freshwater.

I prefer a pool. In my backyard. That never freezes. Best of all worlds.
