I just arrived in altamonte springs for a job. I am looking for an affordable house to rent in the area or a short commute for a family with 2 young children. Any suggestions?

I would depend upon what you deem as affordable. The Orlando metro area has a disproportionately high rental rate (versus salaries) so that can skew expectations. A decent three bedroom house in a safer neighborhood will run around $1500 per month at minimum.

I live in a 3 bedroom house off Palm Springs Drive in Altamonte, in a perfectly safe neighborhood and my rent is 1,150. It's only 1.5 bath and was built in the 60's which I guess for some could take it out of the "decent" category, but we love it.

That's a good area and would certainly call it decent. I did a quick search for the OP and nothing was showing up in Altamonte Springs for much under $1300 in terms of a house so guess you got lucky...

Look in the Sanlando area. Generally it's considered to be bordered by 436 to the south, 434 to the West and I-4 to the East and north. It has a range of different homes in different prices.

I guess I am looking for under $1,000. Can commute to get into something affordable.

I would recommend looking at Deltona which if schools aren't a necessity yet would offer some decent 3 bedroom home options under $1000 per month. Check out the quieter/safer east and southeast sections along Howland Blvd (south of Elkcam) or along the Doyle Rd corridor.

You might be able find something in weathersfield, spring valley or Trail wood in Altamonte. They are all in Spring Valley Elementary which is good. Also look at Casselberry. Nearby Apopka may also be an option.

I'm sending you a list of properties I found online that are in good areas with good schools, and under budget.
