Contrary to what you might think, not everyone in that area is suffering. You can easily make it on a six-figure income; I have two consultant buddies who do just that ... they happened to buy property awhile ago. And they drive to work ...

But see, there's the rub…you had to get in at the right time. If your consultant buddies were trying to buy a house *today* in their neighborhood on their current salary with the same downpayment they had years ago, they wouldn't be able to do it.

I have friends who bought a new house in Marin County four years ago. The husband makes around $150K, the wife is primarily a stay-at-home-mom to two kids although makes ~$20K a year picking up free-lance marketing communications gigs.

He commutes about 45 minutes each way to his job in SOMA. At the end of each month they have money left over for fun things. They aren't jetting off to Paris for lunch, but they eat out, go to various community events, take their kids to the theater and other cultural events, and have a comfortable life.

You know what? Those good jobs don't pay even close to enough to afford to live in that city. The COL is sky high and most people under the age of 30 are living in crammed homes or apartments with many other people and surviving only paycheck to paycheck.

Florida doesn't have the best quality of jobs. We all know that. But the COL throughout most of the state is so affordable that even having a lower income job is enough to survive quite comfortably. You can wait tables and afford a car, an apartment, and a few luxuries while living in Florida.

All things are relative. This jobs report is a good one. I prefer it to Colorado where more people have "good" jobs yet they are completely and totally broke.

I don't think the COL is inexpensive in Florida at all, at least not in the metro areas. Rents are sky high in Orlando right now, comparable to what I pay in a beautiful, walkable, very safe neighborhood in Chicago located just five miles north of downtown. I looked at apartments for rent online in downtown Orlando a few weeks ago and was shocked at the prices. Food is similarly priced. One of the biggest expenses besides rent is that you absolutely must have a car in Florida. The cost of a car, insurance and gas substantially increases the cost of living by several hundred dollars a month.

You're truly delusional if you think that a person could wait tables and live comfortably in Florida unless you're talking about living in a trailer in Bithlo. The cost of living is way of of whack in Orlando nowadays.

How about we compare SF to Tampa, Orlando, Jacksonville, Miami? Same result.

More than you would think. I have any number of friends in the San Francisco/Marin/San Mateo County area who drive to work, make six figures, and have bought a home in the past five years or so. Not all are in tech, either.
