I applaud you for wanting to come here without having been here before, if i understood you correctly. There is quite a large EX pat community here and there are other nice areas outside of Orlando.
I can only advise you from my situation in that i came across 5 years ago after having been here on vacation several times a year for most of my life and i wouldnt choose outside of Orlando to be honest. Simply because for me its an adventure to hop in the car and take my family to visit these other places for a weekend. There are some great communities and really the only thing which you need to consider is your budget and the lifestyle you want to lead. For an example i sell many homes around Poinciana but alot of people dont want to be close to the tourist area with all the neon lights where if truth be known crime may be slightly higher because criminals may or may not target tourists. I myself live very close to Disney ( we can see the fireworks every night but out of the tourist way and we love it, and prices are very reasonable. We take out daughter to Disney alot (she is a 7 yr old princess and pink has thrown up all over her...lol) It all depends on what your looking for and your family needs.
