NYC was ranked #24, it's not exactly at the top of the list but about accurate in my opinion. It's a pretty health/fitness oriented city with a lot of walking for most.

Not in my mind. It's terrible for fumes from cars, buses and subways. So jog all you want, and inhale more of that crap. Also as far as hospitals, they have closed a few very good ones lately.

Surprisingly, NYC isn't even in the top 10 for most polluted air in the country. Pretty good, considering the size of the city.

This. There is little to no manufacturing, there are strict bus idling laws, and much of the city's sanitation fleet has been converted to CNG. Additionally with the DPF's required on most diesel engines these days, the air coming out of the exhaust is cleaner than the air going in.

The worst air in the country is in LA. It's better than it was 25 years ago, but it's still horrendous. Unfortunately as populations have spread in that state, so has the pollution, and it takes the top five spots in the country. Most Polluted Cities - State of the Air 2014 | American Lung Association

people don't pollute cities as much as smokestacks and manufacturing does

This is very false thinking. Agriculture, factories, refineries, etc cause more pollution and health problems. People who live in major cities such as Hong Kong, Tokyo, Seoul live A LOT longer than the average American, yet their cities are more congested. Your diet and exercise habits are far more important than air pollution. With that being said, NYC has 100x cleaner air than many rural areas such as Bakersfield, CA.

Some of the best hospitals in the country are in NYC. NYU-Langone Medical Center, Columbia University Medical Center, Bellevue Hospital, Mount Sinai Hospital and NY Presbyterian to name a few of national reputation. One major hospital (St Vincent's in the West Village) closed recently (in 2010) and never recovered from the 9-11 attacks seemingly in terms of bad memories and stigma. It's reopened this past year as an Emergency Room-only operation however.

Bakersfield is far from rural. It's polluted due to manufacturing and the fact that everyone drives everywhere.

Driving is so ingrained into the California lifestyle that it makes me crazy when I am out there. I stay with friends in what I consider a walkable neighborhood. Under a mile to the Wilshire Farmers Market, the grocery store, local restaurants, about 1.5 miles to Beverly Hills shopping and La Brea. To me those are all walking distances. It's a super safe area and walking at night in a group is never an issue. Yet they use the car to go everywhere!

St. Vincents closed because they had too many charity cases (AIDS) that they didn't get proper government reimbursement for. Shameful, as they were the pioneer in AIDS research and care.

Bellevue is not a hospital I would put on any "best" list.

NYU-Langone is good, but again nothing I'd put on a "best" list.

CUMC does a lot of cutting edge research, but it's a freaking zoo there. I saw a specialist there about a year ago, and my blood pressure was through the roof due to the atmosphere--so different from UCLA Medical Center where I was also seen.

Boston IMO has the real creme de la creme. Mass General (MGH) and Brigham/Women's along with Beth Isreal. Many in the know would likely put MGH #1 in the country, certainly tops in the world.
