Hi, moving to Orlando this summer and wanted to start looking for employment now with the option of moving down sooner and then my family moving down in the summer. I was hoping to hear from people in technology or those who know of great recruiting firms/people they used in the past that specialize in technology. Thanks!

K-Force, TEKSystems, and Robert Half are national firms, but they have a very strong local presence and were very on the ball for tech leads for my husband.

Just saw this today….not sure what they're looking for or what skills you're bringing to the table, but thought I'd pass it along:

EditorJul,

What were the best methods for your husband to find employment in Orlando? I'm in the same boat and I would eventually like to make a move but I hear that hiring managers will not even look at a resume from someone out of state because they can find someone local. My friend said I could use his local address in Orlando but then I run into the problem if a hiring manager wants to interview me in person the next day or so I won't be able to do so because I won't have ample time to take time off from my current job. I have used TekSystems in the past and would first call the local tech recruiting office in Orlando and let them know of my interest and relocation plans.

In the end, because my job went with me wherever we went, we took a leap of faith and moved on my salary alone, and once we got down here, it was only a matter of a couple weeks before interviews started getting lined up and a job offer was on the table. (And that was after several months of applying from out of state with no nibbles whatsoever.)

For almost any of these jobs, the first interview will be a phone one, so that shouldn't be a problem to arrange on short notice from where you are located (and having an out-of-the-area cell phone number isn't a problem, because many people don't change their numbers when they move down). After that, odds are good that whatever job you are going for will start as a contract one, so if you need a little extra time to get to a second interview, you can tell them that your residence is in Florida, but you are currently working out of state on a contract position, so you would need a week of lead time for an in-person interview. With modern technology, some companies are willing to do an "in person" interview over Skype.

The big trick for my husband was taking whatever job would fit his qualifications and previous salary levels, so that meant he took a 6-month contract in Tampa (with telecommuting options, but he still made the commute 2-3 days a week). This allowed us to get established down here and for him to focus on getting his dream job. For that dream job, because he was one of a very few people in the country qualified to his level for it, a recruiter called him up, set up an interview by phone, and then they did a second phone interview before offering him the job. Even though we live 15 minutes from the office, it was easier for them to do it by phone.

So the big trick I think is just focusing on getting any job that will allow you to pay your bills (but not look like a major demotion…you don't want to go from IT professional to burger flipper because getting back to IT professional will be difficult), and then once you get down here and employed, then focus on the job you really want.

Thank you! I was thinking of contacting several tech recruiters (TekSystems, KForce, Global Insight, etc.) and speak to them about my interest, skills, and qualifications at first. Would you suggest that I place my friend's Orlando address on my resume or would it be safe to place my NC address on my resume?

If you don't have an immediate "must be out by" date for where you currently are, I'd start with placing your own local address. If after a couple months you aren't getting any hits, switch to a local address and see if that helps.
