Question Special Education in Central Florida

We are thinking of moving to Orlando but we have a 7 year old son with Down Syndrome. Cany ANYONE give me an firsthand experience on what the school system offers children like my son? Is public school the only option? I have contacted the Down Syndrome ASsoc of CFL but they havnt given much hope. Does anyone have a child with special needs in the public (or private) system that can give me some feedback?

Thanks so much for any answers!

M.

Hi, I don't have a child with DS, but I have taken my son with some sensory and LD issues to The Center for Health Learning and Achievement in east Orlando. They are therapists and have a small school now, but I have seen children with DS receiving therapies there. My thought is that maybe someone there could direct you to resources. They really are a wonderful group of people. Here is their website ... The Center for Health, Learning and Achievement

We just moved from Orlando however, I took my oldest son who is 10 now to The Center for Health, Learning and Achievement. The owner's name is Alicia Braccia and she is the greatest. She has helped all of my children and I don't know how we got through school without her. The public school in Florida is not too compassionate of the "child with even mild learning disabilities", but Alicia Braccia helped us always find the right place for him and help the entire family. She is now starting a school that is in the preliminary stages called "Providence Academy". Call Alicia and let her know that Becky from Atlanta sent you.

I have a special needs child that has went throught the public school system. My suggestion is to go to Seminole County schools as they seem to have better programs than the rest.
