The areas you mention are spread out over a 30-40 mile radius and would base where you look on where you'll most likely be working.

I understand it all depends on my job but since I have not begun to look for jobs I figured I would use the time I have to drive around and understand each area. That way when I do move down with a job in hand, I can pin point safe areas to live and I will already have a general idea and be familiar of what the area looks. Basically I'd rather do the homework now rather than move and then do all the grunt work.

Altamonte Springs
Winter Park
Longwood
Winter Springs
Wekiva Springs
Casselberry
Oveido
Maitland
Windermere
Dr. Phillips
Avalon Park
Hunter's Creek

I'm looking for rents from $800 to $900, preferably maximum at $850. If I have a few apartments I can target I can visit them on my research trip. If one was to research the above areas over a weekend (say arrive Friday late night, leave Sunday afternoon at 1), would it be possible? If so, can you recommend specific roads to travel on to get a "general" idea of how each city is above? Another option I was considering would be to rent a condo, townhome, or house.

This is a pretty broad range... You basically just named all of Metro Orlando, missing pretty much only parts of Lake County...

Sounds like a lot of wasted time putting the cart before the horse. My opinion.

Annerk,

I don't think its wasted time as I'm doing lot of my homework beforehand. The moment I get offered a job wherever it will be, I will already have a better idea of the area I want to live. As I read your earlier comment about the woman moving from Charlotte to Orlando, my planning may take 10 years or more to finalize, and I rather go slow and steady rather than rush just for the sake of being in Orlando. Whenever I have time off from work or I can plan a trip to Orlando (as its exactly a 8 hour drive from where I am), I will have a concrete method. As you and many people know moving is not easy and if I have the opportunity to make it less of a hassle, I'd rather do so.

Just as an FYI, things can change considerably in the amount of time you're describing. I would seriously focus more on the job aspect now because it really won't take much time to figure out where to live once you have an idea of where exactly that is.

This is sage advice. I've been here full time 10 years and have seen what were good areas go very south and what were bad areas improve dramatically during that time--particularly where it comes to rentals.
