After Buddy Dyers run-in with the pit a couple years ago, I'm surprised he didn't try to get them banned. He's certainly not a fan of the breed. Personally I don't think they belong in urban areas--just too much risk.

This thread is two years old. The OP has not returned. It's difficult to stay on topic, a sensitive subject by many for various reasons.

I'll tell you this much - if you're going to an area with small children, you aren't going to be very popular there, and expect to get lots of dirty looks. Pit bulls aren't trusted by parents, and that includes me. And when they do decide to attack, the pit bull-owners are as surprised as anyone that they chose to do so, it seems. If a golden retriever or doberman attacks, you're going to have a nasty bite or two. If a pit bull attacks - especially if they attack children - they may lose their life.

Pit bulls should be registered and regulated as if a person were keeping a pet lion or alligator in the city, IMHO.

It's neither stupid nor unconstitutional, the governments job is to protect people from others who may not be educated enough to protect themselves or others and is always setting regs to control those who can't regulate themselves I.E. there are specific zoning laws for livestock for example and they also have certain gun control regs for firearms and don't let EVERY crazy who wants one to have one just because they desire to do so especially without proper training, permitting and review, at least it's supposed to work that way ..

I find myself in the uneasy position of agreeing on this point.. As a person who works outside much of the time and around peoples yards I've run across more then my fair share of dog owners of many breeds that take the aggressiveness of their dog way too casually and for granted but it's especially unnerving for pitbulls. I've had numbers of them even indoors while I was working outside just doing nearly everything they can to get outside and in some cases even breaking windows or doors when the owner should put them in a room away from that possibility. They are very heavy, powerful and determined like no other and a thin sheet of glass isn't going to hold one back if one wants to get at you..

I had a loose pit bull run up to me and my dog the other night. He/she stood there and was taking an aggressive posture. I immediately ran back in the house and were lucky the thing did not try to follow. I don't know what it wanted. My cousin has a super nice pit mix, but overall I think the country would be much better off without them since their owners cannot always control them. They are living things that act on their own.

I do not trust them around my children AT ALL and I do not feel safe around them. I hate that I feel the need to cross the street with my youngest when we are minding our own business walking through Thornton Park and someone is coming toward us with a PB. And worse, they are often on long leashes and too many people think it is acceptable to allow their dog to actually sniff and make contact with my child. Absolutely not. That applies to all dogs... but especially pit bulls. They should not be allowed downtown or in pedestrian areas. Outside the city limits or in dog parks, fine.

Back in 2010, I saw somebody walking near John Young and Whisper Lakes get attacked by 2 pit bulls. He was attacked right in the middle of the road, several people stopped and scared the pitbulls off. Apparently the owner of the dogs had been home drinking and left his back door open for the dogs to get loose. Needless to say the owner of the pit bulls was arrested and taken to jail

I dont think pit bulls should be banned but they should do some thorough background checks on those who wish to own one. My neighbor 2 doors down has two pitbulls and they are very friendly and well-behaved dogs and they get along great with my moms chihuahua, they even defended him against another neighbor who had a mean dog, luckily it didnt get violent

I would actually like to own a pitbull one day, when I have a house and earn enough money to buy one from a reputable breeder. Pit bulls can be wonderful pets if placed in the hands of the right people
