The effects of the rich over buying property in Florida has been absolutely devastating for the not-rich in Florida in the post recession world.
Property taxes in Florida are high, therefore rich people pay a lot in taxes unless they decide to live in a trailer, but most rich people don't want to live in a trailer park. Compare the ownership rates among the cities you admire such as San Francisco and then compare them to Orlando. You tell me which city has a higher homeownership rate.

Florida's economy very disproportionately benefits the rich and does nothing for those who serve their food and fix their fancy cars.
People with good incomes don't qualify for social programs in these cities. If anything, these cities punish people with good paying jobs so they can fund their pet projects.

My guess is generally low-income folk fleeing higher COL states for the lower COL of Florida and other states.
If you make a good living, most of the cities mentioned have more to offer than Orlando.
Bmws response is perfect. I could have a high end car and nice house in cfl or a shack and a used prius in cali. I'll pick cfl every time.

Native Floridian who went to school here and doing well here after going away for grad school. Some of us:

1) know there are in fact good schools here
2) don't want to be r*ped by high taxes elsewhere.

Your nonsensical ranting could've been said about Texas too, home to plenty of jobs and the highest number of F500 company HQs in the U.S.

I don't see many Floridians moving elsewhere after looking for skilled/educated work but I do see overtaxed ne'ers and west coaster's trying to move here for more bang for their buck.

Hint: there are good public schools, you have to know where to find them. Start with Seminole and Brevard county. Brevard just instituted a sales tax increases specifically for schools.

If you think FL for housing is bad, try liberal enclaves up north or out west. Why do you think people vomit on Google buses in north cal?

Exactly!

You can only go to MOMA so many times before it becomes boring. Likewise, you can only go to Disney World so many times before it becomes boring, but at least in Orlando when the novelty runs out, you find yourself in a nice home with a pool and yard instead of a small bedroom with a bunch of strangers sharing the same kitchen and bathroom commuting on a smelly public bus.

Exactly again!

These people complaining about Florida housing and then looking toward places like California as heaven need a massive dose of reality. As I mentioned earlier, if you rent a one bedroom from a developer, the average person will need to show an income around $126,000 per year, now look at the median household income being $77,000 and you can see how difficult it is to even affording a private rental, yet alone one day being able to buy your own home.

The ongoing comparisons between the cost of living in San Francisco and Orlando are a complete joke and only serve to make the cheerleaders feel better about themselves. To take a city that's dead last and compare to one at the top is hardly a legitimate argument although it continues to be hashed out repeatedly like a broken record. The fact of the matter is, Orlando is dead last in salary/wages among major cities and slightly above the national average in terms of overall cost of living....and not the "deal" it's made out to be for the majority of those living here.

Do you deny that it's cheaper relative to salary to live here vs those other cities?

You have crazy homeless people everywhere, there are no school buses, children are expected to use public transit where there are so many mentally unstable people. That is why there are more dogs than children. When couples want to settle down, they move out to escape the hustle, crime, cost of living to places where they can afford a house with a two car garage in a decent neighborhood.
SF has no suburbs ?

Absolutely....there are umpteen other cities with better salaries and more affordable rental housing in particular.

Yes, I agree.
However, my quality of life here (and that of my family) is significantly better than it would be if I were to move to some of those other cities, which is why we chose to stay here.
