There is house that someone sent to me in Davenport and thought it was nice. Using the sex offender website there were only 13 in a 5 mile radius and the closest was about 1 mile away. Now granted ideally, I'd like to live where there are no sex offenders, but I know that is not realistic. That is in comparison to the house that I also liked in Deltona, where as I said, there were so many in a 5 mile radius that I couldn't even see the blimp where the house that I liked was supposed to be.

I'm still learning the area there. If you can point me to your thread I'd love to read it.

SANDYHAIR I've checked out Winter Garden and not too much that we *think* we can afford monthly payment wise. Didn't know about Windermere but I'll check that one too. Thanks

You shoould try the stoneybrook neighborhood its right next to avalon park.. It is a gated community and the houses are very nice. Its also a golf course. There is an elementary school in stoneybrook also.

Hope this helped somewhat!

Hello...I was in the same situation as you were 7 years ago. We moved to Davenport, FL from Harrisburg, PA. At the time I did not care for Davenport because 1)huge area that was mostly rural subdivisions and a HUGE percentage of the homes are vacation rental homes. You never know who is going to be your neighbor from one week to the next. You will find this is true of all the newer subdivisions in that area still today. Some of the older subdivisions have more owner occupied homes, but they are few and far between. 2)I guarantee you do not want to be in the little town of Davenport itself. It is very poor..as a whole. 2) You have to be careful where you decide on if your kids will be going to school there...as they can be bussed for miles and miles. Of coarse elementary schools are not as far apart as the high schools, but still something to consider. 3) We stayed in Davenport 4 years because my oldest started and finished high school..which at the time meant going to Haines City High School. I was just counting the days almost from the beginning until we could move over to Orlando. 4)Several years ago Davenport did not have much in the way of shopping. You had to drive to Haines City for a bank, walmart, a grocery store and virtually everything else. Today that has changed. There is much more shopping up and down Hwy 27...mostly at I-4. Having moved here from Mechanicsburg, PA...where the schools are excellent, I can tell you that you are generally going to be diappointed by the schools in Florida if you enroll your children in public schools...we did. I have 4 kids so we did not have the $$$ for private schools for all of them.

I live not far from Lockheed Martin so I know this area of Orlando very well. I can help you with lots of info. A lot of places that I see people listing as considerations for you will require quite a lengthy commute...and in Orlando that is not fun. Seminole County schools are the best in the area as a whole...but that encompasses cities up on the northside of downtown Orlando...which would be a horrible commute. Winter Park has the highest rated schools in Orange County as a whole, but there are some good elementary schools in several other areas including in what we refer to as southwest Orlando...which is where Lockheed Martin is considered to be. Winter Park is also very expensive and probably overrated in my opinion. If you would like to look for nice housing on the southwest side of Orlando which would be a convenient communte and has good elementary schools you need to consider: 1)Dr. Phillips 2)Windermere 3)Winter Garden 4) Hunter's Creek--which is where I live. All of these areas have A rated elementary and middle schools. I don't know what your budget is, but real estate skyrocketed out of control here during the past 4 years and things are now coming down in price so it is a buyer's market. For an average 3BR home you won't find much for less than $300,000. 4BR and homes with pools will generally be $400,000 and up. There are always exceptions, but... There is lots of excellent shopping on the southwest side of town and new shopping is constantly going up. You will also be close to 3-4 major malls (just on this side of town) and all of the outlet malls. If you like going to the theme parks like we do, you are right there for all of them...Disney, Sea World, and Universal. On the southeast side of Orlando, Waterford Lakes, Avalon Park, and Lake Nona are all very nice, but not a commute I would want to make when you have good choices much closer to your husband's job. Good Luck. If I can help with anything, please let me know.

Default Add Celebration to list

I just remembered, you might want to look at Celebration...which is actually in Osceola, not Orange county...but is considered southwest. Celebration is "the town that Disney built". It is a wonderful place to live and raise a family. A totally planned city with EXCELLENT schools. The town is immaculate. It is just off I-4 @ Hwy 192. Houses are of all sizes and townhomes, condos, apartments can all be found there. I doubt that there are many sex offenders there, but I haven't checked. It is right at Disney but on the other side of the interstate than all of the parks. Homes in Celebration are probably $400,000 to the millions. Really a cute, adorable place. I wish I could afford it.

I think celebration is out of the OP price range.

Hmmm most of the areas close to sand lake are either high crime or really expensive not too much in the way of affordable homes on that side of town.

What is your price range? maybe we can help you out by searching around.
