safe towns close to disney
Hi,
It will be appreciated if anyone can give me some basic idea about the safety/crime rate of towns around Disney. I am relocating to orlando to work for Disney (lake buena vista). And I hope to find a town close enough to Disney(well, let's say 30min commute) and safe for my family.
However when I look at the crime data on this website, it was really a surprise to me that it seems Windermere is the only town with a crime index lower than national average. And it is so expensive. I did my homework to search this forum, and other towns recommended by other people, e.g., winter garden, clermont, are not that safe?
Can anyone give me some idea about the safety and crime conditions in this region? Many thanks!

There is a nice development not more then 10 mins from Disney called Independence. It's in Winter Garden but very close to Windermere. Very nice area.

There are some very nice neighborhoods in both Clermont and Winter Garden. You could also consider Howey-in-the-Hills or Groveland which would get you to Disney in about 45 minutes via the turnpike. I grew up in Howey and it is one of the safest towns you're going to find in central FL. It's a small town that is growing fast.

Thanks a lot for your information. I googled some information on Independence and it looks fine.
One thing I cannot understand about florida real estate is that: if I search for single family houses, the results often do not come up with the lot size. Right now I am living in new england, so lot size is pretty important to the property value.

Thanks for your information. By saying "some very nice neighborhoods" do you mean the safety can vary dramatically from one section of the town to another? Then it is quite difficult for me to find out such information. Any idea?
According to the data from this website ( Clermont, Florida (FL) Detailed Profile - relocation, real estate, travel, jobs, hospitals, schools, crime, news, sex offenders), in 2006 the crime index is 580.3 versus national average of 280.8. That year there were 14 rapes, 18 robberies, 96 assaults, 177 burglaries, 455 thefts, 27 auto thefts, and 2 arsons taking place in Clermont. I am too dumb to understand what these numbers means coz I am not actually living here. Can you please provide a little more information?

I have learned that in most of the areas from Tampa to Daytona acroos the region are well above the national average for overall crime index. That being said, I would find an area that has the lowest crime index within your budget and then from there, break it down further to see out of that index, which one has the lowest violent crime (like murder, rape, assault, robberies). If you have to choose the lesser of 2 evils I would rather live in an area that has more non-violent thieves than violent criminals. A lot of areas are like this, the crime index is higher mainly because of larceny, thefts, and car burglaries. Of course, you then want to make sure of the sexual offender\predators as well. Choose a radius from the potential home of what will be acceptable to you. You will find sexual predators almost everywhere in FL as well.

Surprised no one has mentioned Celebration! That is Disney's TOWN. The police even ride around in electric go-carts. Very safe very nice area. As far as affordability though....it's a bit expensive.
Winter Garden as a whole is not filled with crime, they just have their patches and streets you learn not to go down. Near Fowler's grove (new shopping complex) is a very safe area, as well as Stoneybrook west.
