Look if you are set on Orlando, just be prepared for a very long job search - unless you can drum up some freelance. In your case, I might be wrong. But despite what a previous poster said, getting a job at Disney is NOT EASY. If you are in LA, my suggestion is to try and find a connection at the studios for an intro here locally. Some of the jobs are posted on boards, but frankly those things are black holes. Your resume goes into a pit and filed by some HR nub. You need personal intros to get into any of these places. Agency life here is very small. There are a handful of them here -- maybe 5 tops -- all working on local or b2b mostly. If you have a network, use it for all it's worth and get some industry contacts down here. If you want, PM me and perhaps we can meet up with you get here. Like I said, I consult right now but all my clients are back home in NYC.

Thank you so much for the help! Just as we were preparing to move to Orlando, I was offered a staff writer position at a magazine here in L.A.! Though I still have my heart set on moving back to Florida, I feel like I really should stay here for this job. As you said, I could be looking for something in the publicity/publishing/writing field for a long time! I have applied for a few things in Orlando, but haven't heard back. I figure that they have more than enough local applicants and are not even considering me.

I wouldn't mind freelance writing for a while after moving, but with only about 5 pr agencies, I don't know if I would ever find anything there. There seem to be a few Orlando-based magazines but I don't know how hard it would be to get on the staff of one of them.

Thanks again for the advice! Would you advise that I stay here for this job since landing something decent in Orlando could be a long shot? I figure I can always do this for a year and then move, just to get more experience. I am just sad because we were really looking forward to getting out of the rat race of L.A. and living in Mt. Dora.

I am in a similar field, Marketing/ PR. I grew up in Orlando but moved to NYC 10 years ago because there just isnt that much in Orlando in these fields.

I had been searching online for job opportunities in Orlando for a few months because I was ready to buy a home. However, i could not find anything that would pay me anywhere near what I am earning in NYC. I ended up changing my strategy. Instead of looking for companies in Orlando, i started looking for companies here in NY that had offices in Florida or could eventually let me work remotely and that paid off. After 1 year of working for a new company, I am now getting ready to move back to Orlando and just work remotely. The best part is that I get to keep my NYC salary.

So i guess what I am trying to say is that maybe its worth looking at your situation from a different angle that could potentially open up more opportunities. Are there companies in LA that could eventually let you transfer to Orlando?
