Hello. I am considering a move to Orlando from L.A., and was wondering where I should look for publicity/communications type jobs as well as entertainment positions. By entertainment jobs I mean working for casting directors and stuff, not working at the amusement parks. Does anyone know of a particular website that I can check out? I have sites that I go to for L.A. jobs, but they don't have Orlando listings. Maybe there just aren't many of these types of jobs there? I know Orlando isn't a hub for these types of jobs, but some filming and production work does go on in the city.
Also, are there many public relations/advertising/marketing jobs in the city? I never see any listed on Monster or Careerbuilder. Thanks in advance! Oh, and I spelled RELATIONS wrong (typing quickly) and don't know how to edit the title. ![]() Last edited by gypsystar; 02-20-2008 at 05:05 PM.. |

Hmmm, maybe there aren't many of these types of jobs in Orlando. I did find a few, and sent my resume, but of course I didn't get a response because I am from out of town.
To all the locals - is competition for jobs fierce in Orlando? Part of the reason I want to escape L.A. is because it is impossible to get a good job (even with the right experience) here because there are just way too many people. I am starting to worry that I will have the same problem in Orlando. I certainly know that they aren't just giving away jobs there, but I am hoping I will have more of a chance. This would be a big move for my husband (a union carpenter) and I and I don't want to make a bad decision if I can help it. Thoughts? |

I really need some insight about employment opportunities before I take the plunge and move, so I am bringing this to the top again! There has to be someone out there that can offer a few words of advice.

I moved to from a large metro to Orlando. And have been sending stuff out for months. Had I not moved from where I was, I would have had 10 jobs by now with my resume, network & experience. The market here is small, not very developed, low paying compared to major metros like LA. And don't anyone convince you that it's all that much cheaper - it's not "that" cheap. Comparably I found a few things to be higher here. And the "right to work" laws are not very employee friendly - rather the opposite. I hate to come off negative regarding your move, but if my personal circumstances were any different, I would have avoided moving down here. If you want to move to FL as a whole, I would direct you either to the Tampa or Miami areas. Do not move here unless you have a job lined up or you can work independently as I am currently. |

I definitely know that the pay isn't good there, but it isn't good in L.A., either! I have several years of pr experience and can't seem to make over $32k a year here. That may sound good in Orlando, but it is awful for L.A., where my rent is $1400/month for a small one-bedroom. Thankfully I am married, because I could never afford to live alone here! We are looking at a one-bedroom for $675 in Mount Dora, and it seems so affordable to us. I lived in Miami for four years and wasn't impressed. We are pretty set on Orlando, and we are hoping that my husband will be able to get something in construction right away. He is in the union and has already been in contact with the reps there. Hopefully something works out there because it is getting very hard to stay afloat here in L.A.! |

Well you can try Downtown Orlando, Universal Resort, Walt Disney, or Sea World. But if want to save money, try Cleos or Rachels.

Yes, you are right. I guess I am just scared that those types of places will have more service oriented jobs, but I will check it out.
What is Cleos and Rachels? |
