Nope, the biggest changes after Andrew were:

-Revoked local government control of building codes and moved this to the state level
-Florida Building Code is similar to/based on changes made to the International Building Code
-Structures east of US1 must withstand sustained winds up to 124mph and 3 second gusts up to 160mph, Structures west of US1 must withstand sustained winds up to 116mph and 3 second gusts up to 150mph.
-Exterior Impact Protection is required (reinforced doors, impact resistant windows or hurricane shutters)

Reasonable enough to enforce these requirements across all of Florida IMO, especially considering feedback from one builder who states these changes only amount to a 1% increase in the cost to build the house.

Have you considered The Villages? Might be a little too far out in the country for you, but it's the fastest growing community in the U.S. for a reason.....

Thanks all - appreciate the feedback. I hear great things about the Villages, but think we'd be happier in a more diverse age range - more of a mix vs all young or all older.

You've given me a lot to explore. Still debating getting out of FL entirely, but it's tough when our only family/friends are in FL. Orlando would be closer/more familar. Will be debating what to do this winter - for now, just want hurricane season to end!
