Well that is a good realistic amount to allow for rent. Are you looking to live closer to he heart of the city or the suburbs? around families or students?
If you picked up an apartment guide and simplay had questions about parts of town, here is an overview:

Nice: Downtown, UCF, Waterford, Winter Park, Oviedo, Altamonte, Maitland, Lake Mary, Celebration, Lake Nona, Baldwin Park, Dr Phillips, Winter Garden, Winter Springs, Longwood, College Park, and Belle Isle.

Areas to generally avoid: Pine Hills, Paramore, Metrowest, Florida Mall, Kissimmee, Airport area, Azalea Park, Goldenrod, Sanford, Rosemont, Lockhart, Eatonville, Apopka, Ocoee, Hunters Creek, Millenia, and Lee Vista.

Some of the areas I listed on the areas to avoid list are not that bad, but for what you listed as a rent price, you could afford the nicer areas. Areas like Metrowest and Hunter's Creek are actually nice, but the apartments in the area are not as nice as the neighborhoods. Also, Winter Park includes two Zip codes: 32789 and 32792. 32789 is Winter Park proper and a lot nicer. I would not rent in 32792. You should have no problem affording a nice place. You may also want to look into renting a home in one of the areas in my nice list.
If you have questions about anything I listed or a part of town specifically, just ask!
It would also depend if you are looking for a newer or older part of town, your age group preference, bohemian or yuppie or whatnot. There are a lot of options for ya, hope I could help! Again, ask me if you have more questions!
