Racers are harmless and they are afraid of people they will go the other way.

Ok, I stand corrected. We came home from the beach this past Sunday to TWO LONG, BIG BLACK SNAKES in our driveway! We couldn't believe it! They scattered, one to the right, one to the left in our neighbors yards. One neighbor came home shortly after us so we told him what happened. They spotted it in their bushes and chased it back out towards our house. I'll just say our neighbor got one with a golf club... not sure what happened to the other one. I have to say... these things were scary! Our neighbor said he thought it was s cottonhead, whatever that is! Anyone have any info?

Trish, relax, I can say that 99% of the time you will never run into a snake! I do believe you can over come your paranoia though... just continue your research and talk to people that can help. I have a dear friend who at 53 has never been on an airplane because she is completely paranoid, obsessive about plane crashes and would probably have a heart attack if she tried to fly. It controls her life, she can never travel. I wish she would talk to someone but she is way too set in her ways. Please do not let the snake thing control you too.

No no no.....CottonMOUTH is the name of the snake.
CottonHEADS are down in Naples, driving Crown Vics and Cadoo Fleetwoods.

I don't know if anyone else has said this to you, but moth balls sprinkled around the house and yard keep the snakes away, and I lived in NJ for 3 years. There are snakes there as well.

We moved down here from Atlanta about a month ago and I'm probably as scared of snakes as you are, but I have walked my dog every day without seeing one but I keep my eyes open as I would do anywhere....

MisterNY will become famous soon enoughMisterNY will become famous soon enough
Sorry to come on this thread so late. It's been two months since there was a post here. I lived in Orlando from 2003-2005 (Apopka area). When we bought our house there, we were greeted by snakes. The first day I moved, while carrying furniture into the house, a black snake zoomed past my leg...I ran into the house, made sure every door and window was closed. Fast forward to 5-6 days later. I was mowing the lawn, and what do you know. On my way to put the mower back in the garage, I saw a brown/green snake that scared the S%^t out of me. It must have been about 4 feet long and inches away from me. I never seen that color, and I have a phobia of snakes like you. I called a relative to come kill it. I took off my shirt of fear of feeling anything on my body. I was looking at it sticking its head out the grass, scary site . I ended up paying a company to do the lawn ever since (phobias, I tell ya). Then there was the time I saw another black one in the garage. I was getting fed up with the situation. I had the entire backyard cleaned up. (removing all shrubbs, bushes, cut grass extremely low). We also had a grapefruit tree in the yard. I hear they like the smell of citrus. We had a jacuzzi in the yard on a deck that I never enjoyed thanks to these snakes. Lord knows I hate them, and can't deal with having them live so close. The thing is that the house we bought was a foreclosure, and the investors who sold it to us did some minor maintenance inside (clean up and paint), but neglected the rear yard. So we were left with getting the yard (Front and rear) done. After clearing everything, I didn't have much of a problem with snakes, though I could bet my life there were some under the jacuzzi and deck. I never used that thing, simply because of my fear of snakes. Funny thing, my (ex)wife was not affraid of snakes like I was, but had a phobia of lizards. It was the other way around. No fear of lizards, rodents, bugs or anything else for me. Living in NYC also, I never saw a snake roaming freely. Nowhere in any of the boroughs, just some show offs in the streets with them around their necks in Manhattan..
I'm in South Florida now, and have not had that problem. I saw two extremely small black snakes down here. You would think they were worms....I dont like reptiles period (but can deal with the others, Im not affraid of them). I see lots of Iguanas at C.B. Smith park during the week. They are all over. Still better than seeing snakes in my opinion. I hope you are ok with your situation. At the time, a colleague told me to put a small amount of Diesel fuel in a container, and let it stay there and the snakes would be repelled. I never saw another one in the garage. I used to enjoy working on my cars in there, kept it clean, but once the snake incident happened, I got scared of going back there. Once I tried the diesel, I never saw one in there. I'm super anal about keeping my property clean (in and out), always been that way with everything. To minimize incidents, always keep your area clear of clutter/junk, always close your garage door if you're not coming or leaving. Dont give animals a place to hide, and you'll be ok. My only problem with snake away/sulfur powder were the ugly yellow stains they leave on the driveway and walkway. Hope things are ok for you now. Still, be careful.

Funny thing, I was at Lion Country Safari in Palm Beach a few months ago. I saw snakes a few feet away from me going in the water stream, and was not as affraid as I was in Orlando. I didn't want to be close to them, but didn't have the initial reaction I used to have, which was running as fast and far as I could. Am I gradually overcoming my fear of them? I dont know. I just know that I try to avoid them as much as I can.
