The majority of the homes I’ve seen have popcorn ceilings. It is not a feature I’m accustomed to and I don’t care for them. What is the best, most cost effective, way to get rid of them?

What price range are you looking at? I’m constantly looking at homes and I’d say 95% don’t have them, but then again the price range might be the reason why.

There are quite a few companies that remove popcorn ceilings. I don’t know how much though.

You'd be surprised how easy it is to get rid of. Just take a wide scraper to it, making sure to keep it at the proper angle-they will come right off. It takes a few minutes of practice, but works every time. A thin set of mud over surface can then be used, and lightly sanded to return to nice, flat ceiling.

I did this to a friends' house over the summer. Time consuming, but it easily comes off. Took me about 25 hrs. to do the living room, complete with mud and sanding.

Mid 300’s to low 400’s built before 2000. Newer homes taut knock down ceilings in their descriptions.

Thank you Terra. Makes sense.

I know you'll probably hire it out Brooklyn. But wanted you to know the process and approx. time frame, so you don't get ripped off. Also, I'm surprised how many sub-contractors don't know how to do it. It's just common sense.

Maybe it’s the age of the home as the reason you are seeing so many because that’s a healthy budget.

Try calling this company. They have a lot of great reviews and specialize in popcorn ceiling removal. You can ask for just a ballpark estimate to remove xxxx sqft of popcorn ceilings.

Why are those things even popular? It's ugly, is a pain in the neck to clean, and I really just can't see any benefit to having that.

The main reason was because it was easier for builders. They made room for imperfections on the ceiling. Then the whole asbestos things pretty much killed that trend. There is some thought that it helps woth sound absorption but I don’t think that was a big reason for residential homes. Mainly it made it easier for builders and people didn’t care and the dangers of asbestos wasn’t known.

Bklyn,
I’m not sure how high your ceiling is now but my Cape on LI only had 8’ ceilings and now my great room has a 10 ft ceiling so I’m not sure if I would notice popcorn up there.

Things we needed to put in when we moved here - water softener, recessed lighting.
