Hi friends! I've been living in Orlando for about 6 months now and am considering going for a drivers license (I have a full international drivers license). I don't have a car myself (perhaps obviously), so I'd be renting a car to take the test. The one sticking point that I'm confused about is car insurance? I need it to take the drivers test, but I don't know how to purchase it without a US drivers license. Will purchasing car insurance from the rental company be enough to cover PIP/PDL? Any advice or clarification??

Take the test at a driving school, such as this one. They will provide the car and the insurance.

Do you have to take an new test? Why is it not possible to convert the (international) driving license to a FL one? I thought that it was just a simple paperwork.

I'm Australian. All of my research so far has told me that countries like Canada might be able to have their licenses transferred but I guess I have to prove that I'm not gonna accidentally drive on the wrong side of the road or something ^^;

If it makes you feel any better, citizens of most right side driving countries also have to take the driving test. I believe it has to do with reciprocity agreements, and the willingness of governments to negotiate agreements with all 50 US states and a bunch of territories. In addition to Canada, France, Germany, Taiwan and South Korea seem to be keen on negotiating reciprocity agreements for their citizens to drive in as many countries as possible. Other countries, not so much.
