My wife and I are planning to relocate to Seminole county from New York next year, as she has a transfer opprotunity. We are considering Seminole after a visit last summer, on the basis of home prices and reputation of the schools. I have heard some disheartening stories about the Orlando area, and am wondering if this applies to Seminole county. I am most concerned about the job market (headhunters are promising me a comparable salary to the $80k I make in NYC as an accounting manager) and the schools.

Thanks

Seems like you should expect 50% less. See thread.

Orlando and NYC sallaries are not comparable. Better do some more research before moving down here thinking that you will be making anything near the same that you make in NYC.

Default Moving to Seminole from nyc

Been living in central florida for 20 years now. You can expect to take a big pay cut - but the thing the thing to be aware of is the housing market. It's absolutley crazy. You will be paying top dollar for bottom dollar quality. No basements. Property insurance (if you can get it) is sky rocketing (thanks to recent hurricanes) and traffic is insane (coming from NYC, probably not too bad). School systems stink and crime is crazy. Sorry to be such a downer - the climate is nice here though. Job market is good as well.

However, if you are choosing to come down you are correct about Seminole County being a bit cheaper and having better schools...

I wish I could help you on job advice but I'm not very familiar with the market for your expertise. As I'm sure you are aware, the head-hunter folks will promise quite a few things to get you interested. $80 K would be a liveable wage (though tough to buy a house if you don't have money saved already for a down payment).

What many in the area do for cheaper housing is look up I-4 to Volusia County and buy in the Deltona Lakes area (for instance). A good house can still be had in the $180's there and the commute to downtown isn't too bad (though you'll find most jobs aren't actually in downtown, so......

Good luck to you!!!
