Default Areas to Stay Away From?

I'm moving to Orlando next month to attend UCF. While ideally I would like an on campus job, there are some other options I want to pursue as well, and realistically, I won't be bound to the campus 24/7. I know that Orlando has a high crime rate per capita, and I have searched the forums so to read about it. What specifically are "dangerous" areas to stay away from? The executive airport seems close to campus, and there is also a job I am interested in next to Lake Eola park. and another in city walk. I know there are many options as far as weekend entertainment goes and things to do with friends, but I'd like a scouting report on bad areas before I venture too far out.

Thanks!

the orlando sentinel has a search feature that lets you see where the murders from last year are on the map of orlando. you can also see other types of crime, which is really handy for knowing where NOT to go.

Off hand I can tell you areas to stay away from especially at night. Pine hills, Lee road, OBT, west colonial up until hiawassee road, orlo vista. The inner city areas just due west of Downtown. Rio grande around the citrus bowl all the way south. Texas ave and any surrounding areas. And azeala and tangelo park areas. Tangelo park is a ghetto right near international drive do not get stuck there at night.

SE Orlando is seedy, I'm not sure of the exact crime rate there, though there are areas that are high in crime all over this town. It's not like any other town where one side of town has all the crime.

Winter Park and Maitland are okay but Eatonville is crime ridden and reaches out to those areas. Metro West is "murder west" and all other areas crime is fairly rampant. Read FBI data reports at least Orlando can boast about something; high temperatures and high crime.

tangelo park also has the dubious distinction of being the area that i found while investigating orlando area with the most sex offenders per small area. i think there are about 8 offenders there and there are only about 20 streets. i did not do the whole city, so i may have missed something else, but that was certainly enough to make me decide to stay away from tangelo park!

I would say it depends on what your looking for.Are you going to be in school full-time because the distance between UCF main campus and city walk isn't exactly a quick drive. Unless the job pays really well or you only doing part-time or online courses, city walk would probably not be worth the amount of gas and tolls. The executive airport isn't close to campus but it's not far away, it's just in a high traffic area so depending on what your hours are it may take a lot longer than whatever time mapquest is suggesting.

There are several student housing apts around UCF where you rent your room and share a kitchen/living room with 1,2 or 3 others and there's also a lot of regular apts but they won't usually rent to full-time students even if you also work full-time and if they later find out that you are full time they can evict you and you forfeit your deposit but that only happens if you live in a really nice place.

You shouldn't really have to worry about many of the areas mentioned in previous posts because it wouldn't make sense to live on that side of town while trying to go to UCF unless you were moving in with someone.

If you can give me some more specifics I can help a little more.

Thanks for all of the info. As for housing, that isn't an issue. I'm living in the "Towers" that they just built on campus, the new condos. As for specifics, I was referring more to places to stay away from when looking for something to do on the weekends, areas to not get a job in, etc.

Certain areas on that map BOY-N-TOWN provided are from domestic situations. Mainly the areas with multiple red tags like OBT, Parramore, and Pine Hills are worse for homicide. Read the tags for more elaboration on the murder.
