I wanted to make some comments about your situation, having had the "dream" myself for quite a few years before taking the plunge and moving here. Like you, I fell in love with Florida after coming here on holidays.
You sound like a very level-headed person, and you come across as being one of the rare few who actually listen to the advice given on forums like this, makes a refreshing change.
Anyhow, what I wanted to say after reading your posts is this......don't kid yourself into thinking living here is like it is when you're on holiday. I thought I knew what the lifestyle would be like, as I'd been coming here 2 or 3 times a year for many years and already had our own home here. It's nothing like I expected. And the work ethics here would horrify you, compared to how things are in the UK.
About the Immigration Lawyer......why spend $150 to hear either what you can find on here, or worse still, get told a load of old bull. You'll get the best advice from your fellow countrymen who've been through the hell of US Immigration themselves.
I believe in not sugar-coating the facts......and (in my opinion) from what you've told us about your situation, you have zero chance of getting here through the employment route. However, as others have said, buying a business could be a way in for you. But the E2 visa is a very insecure one, and your status here would always be dependant on the business you own.
Sorry it's all a bit doom and gloom. But truth be known......this place ain't all it's cracked up to be. If I had my time over again, I wouldn't do it.
But best wishes whatever you decide to do.

Hi, (I have been away from this thread as I have had trouble with the internet) anyway read with interest from where I last posted....
I like Marypoppins am a registered nurse (infact when i read this post i thought it was me who wrote the first part of it lol) I have been here for almost 3 year after taking just over 3 years to go through the process of getting out here.
i agree with Marypoppins that it isnt like being on holiday although it did take us a VERY long time to get out of holiday mode and come back down to earth!!!! It is a fire a will state too which is wonderful (not) becuase you can get fired at a whim here and there isnt a thing you can do about it - I hear so many peopel say they got fired becuase they got injured on the job...dont think that is fair....
I agree with the immigration lawyer too - some arent so good and unless you get a good recommendation of one then you could easily be wasting your money and the way the economy is at the moment you are best off taking advice from places like this.
The E2 visa is a way in for you but doesnt give you a Green Card at the end of it, is very temporary and stressful as when you go for renewal you dont know whether you will get your visa renewed or whether it will be for 2 years or for 5 years - that is a lot of stress constantly worry about your business, your home & family etc, and if you have kids they have to leave at 21 (even if they spent practically all their life here) I know a lot of people who are on this visa and i know they are finding it hard to keep their heads above water at the mo aswell as having the added worry that they could be returning to the UK soon.
I love it hear - although it did take me a while to settle. (My kids and Hubby settled almost immediately) I dont regret it for one minute but I am lucky - have a great job, nice house and live by the beach (although now we live here dont go there as often as we thought we would!!!)
Anyway that is my take on things.....
