We just became eligible and it costs us almost $175 dollars a week. The company he works for now is commission based. We qualify for NOTHING!!! Our income level is too high and it's a joke. he has some really good weeks but lately its been really tough. I make $8.50 an hour working part time as a pre-k teacher. I made more working for NY state when I was 17 ($9.50 working with disabled adults) We made a huge mistake but don't have the money to move back. We are stuck here for now and like I tell my husband everyday we must make the best of the situation we are in. Wishing it away only wastes valuable energy and sleep.
These stories really break my heart. Florida destroys so many families.

Low wages are the only reason I left Florida. I graduated from UF and applied for various jobs all over the state. After about 5 months of interviewing my best job offer was making $7.35/hr at Carnaval headquarters in Miami. I have not lived in Florida for a few years and I am making more than all my friends in Florida, even the ones with masters degrees. It's a real shame because I really miss living down there but I dont know if I could handle the pay cut.

The pay is also the reason I am moving to another city this summer.

I had two years of college, I dropped out and got job as an assistant, and two years later, due to my being so efficient at work, I'm the Manager of Ops. It's all about how much you want it, and how much you're willing to work instead of thinking that well I have a degree so I'm too good to make $10 an hour.

If you have a job making $10 an hour here in Orlando, you should be glad you even have a job because there are thousands of people who can't find jobs, or are getting layed off.
Well, maybe I should have been more specific because I'm far from a new college graduate. I actually got my degree back in Europe in 1994 however when I moved to America my degree did not "count" because of the different school systems, so I decided to go back to school and get me two more degrees (I also speak three languages fluently). I have worked since I graduated in 1994, and any job I have had I have always excelled. Fresh out of college in 1994 I started out as an administrative assistant and I was promoted within, so I totally agree with the comments about being willing to work yourself up. However with three degrees, three languages, I know I'm too good to only be making $10 an hour. Sorry for being so blunt, but if I didn't believe in myself...who would?

The pay here is ridiculous. A year and a half ago they offered me $6.50 an hour to drive hundreds of miles a day. I thought initially I would be typing, data entry, or maybe even counting cars or something like that. Instead they made this ridiculous offer that makes no financial sense at all. The real shocker, the compensation was only 25 cents per mile and I had to use my own car (I don't really have a car of my own). I told them to go screw themselves, only more nasty. I actually relished telling the jerks that. "Do you think I'm stupid? That pay won't even pay for repairs on the car... go f' yourselves!". I actually said that at an interview because I was so angry, and I just stormed out of there. I've got a college degree and I'm educated, I should be making more money than that.
