Default Whats up with Apopka Florida oh yeah also Sanford

I use to live in Altimonte Springs Florida. I thought it was very nice but Apopka was the pits. I worked as a manager in Walgreens (which doubled as our personal Apopka police sub station) Now i see new homes starting around 300k up. I saw a home i liked for around
428k but I sure as dont want to spend that type of Money to be in a crime infested area

P.S. Has Sanford gotten any better i like a house there also

There are some newer nicer area in Apopka. I would be really careful there, however. Sanford also is an up and comer. They have built some beautiful new communities west of town. Downtown is being revitalized, but they have a long way to go yet.

I have lived in Apopka for almost 2 years, and in my opinion I think it is a nice city. Sure you have the bad section of town but the development I live in is nice, and the whole area around it. I don't notice much of any crime in this section of the city and when I do see it its on the less fortunate part of Apopka.

The new downtown is suppose to be really nice, and I see some great changes taking place. With the new schools, new shopping area's, and developments I think that its a great place to live.

Just my opinion.

Default Update

After living here for almost 2 years, I asked my husband to take me through the bad section of Apopka to see where some people get there opinions of city.

It wasn't very pretty, infact it was a little scary. A lot of poverty and run down, old houses. We did see a few police cars but we were also near the police station. To be fair and give my honest opinion, if all I saw was that section of Apopka, I would NOT recommend even looking in Apopka.

However once we crossed Main street, it was like we were in a totally different world. Everything was clean and new and the park is great, and the closer I got to our home, I knew the city was changing for the better. The homes are beautiful, the lifestyle was completely different from the other side of town. The schools are nice (especially the new school and field of dreams).

I think it is a great place to live, close to everything. And I still stand by what I said in a previous post, that you really don't have a need to travel through the bad part of town (unless all other roads were shut down).

Just wanted to be fair and not just say great things about the city without having seen the other part.

Hey FLmomof2, your kids go to the schools in Apopka? What grades are they in? We are moving to Mount Dora in a month or two and we found out since we'll be in the Orange County side of town, our daughter will be going to the Apopka schools. She's in 7th grade right now so she'll be going to to Apopka Middle School for now. I've heard a few people recommend to me about private school but the prices are just too high from what I can see.

My daughter actually goes to a school in Orlando (Lake Gem) because she is in Speech Pre K (working on articulation). Kindergaten will be in the Fall and she is zoned for Wolf Lake Elementary and Middle school. We have talked with some parents who have older kids in that school and they say its very good. Not sure what school you are zoned for since you are in Mt Dora. The school is VERY nice, and the field of dreams is great (the soccer, baseball fields, and playground).

Well I was told that our daughter would go to Apopka Middle School and then the Apopka High School in 9th grade. I heard something about Wolf Lake, but is that a middle school or elementary school? I also heard that we might be able to petition for her to go to Mount Dora schools but I'm not sure if that's better or worse. I'd have to imagine it would be quite a trip for her to go to Apopka for school every day though, no?

Mt. Dora public schools (Lake County) are better than the Apopka schools. The Apopka schools are some of the worst in Orange County. And, from Mt. Dora, they are quite a commute. Orange county should never have allowed developers to build anything more than one unit to 5 acres in that area - they just don't have the infrastructure or schools to support it. Eventhough it is right next to Mt. Dora, Mt. Dora proper is in Lake county, which is totally different than NW Orange County.

Eventually, I think that Orange County will build some new schools out there in the Mt. Dora area, and if/when they do, that area just to the southeast of Mt. Dora may become a desireable area.

Well they just built Wolf Lake Elementary and Wolf Lake Middle Schools, which are supposed to be very nice new schools. So maybe that's the start?

Wolf Lake Elementary and Middle schools are very nice and getting very good reviews for the first year. Clay Springs is another nice school in Apopka. I have never heard that Apopka Schools are the worst in Orange County. Infact Apopka Elementary and Middle are doing much better now that they have added the new school to decrease the overcrowding.

Apopka Elementary is getting a new wing as well a new high school going in and a new Apopka High School.
