I rent a room in a 3 br house. Internet, according to my lease, is included with my utilities. Initially I had a wireless router, but due to slow connection I asked my landlord if I could switch it and use an Ethernet cable. He said that I could have one or the other, or if I wanted both I had to pay for more bandwidth. I don't need both so I decided to go with the cable. The cable has been running in the hall and landlord said he would drill a hole in the ceiling to run the cable. My other roommates needed the wireless so I unhooked the Ethernet cable from my computer and hooked up the wireless router. He saw this and assumed I had both connections running simultaneously. Now he has unhooked my Ethernet cable from the modem. I'm paying for Internet but now he won't let me use it. Any advice?

Try talking to your landlord. You do, after all, live in the same house.

Also, if you're getting a cable connection, there are no extra charges for additional bandwidth used. It's a flat monthly fee, regardless if you use a wireless router or not. Either your landlord doesn't understand how he is billed, or he's lying to you.

That's ridiculous, your landlord is insane. I don't see why you would have to pay for double the bandwidth.

How much is he charging you for internet access? Maybe you could get your own connection through BHN to avoid this nonsense?

You could explain to your landlord that your pc cannot use the wireless network and the wired network at the same time.

One thing you could do if the landlord insists is: Plug the modem in the wireless router, run a cable from the router to your pc, and have your landlord setup the wireless access list, specifically excluding your PC's MAC address (or show him that you're doing it). That way, he'll know that you're only using the wired connection.

It sounds like your landlord is network illiterate or doesn't want you to slow down his streaming speed when he's watching live p o r n.
