Unhappy How do people in Orlando survive?

Ok, I'm completely confused!! I just moved to Orlando from Jersey and just started job hunting. HOW IN THE WORLD DO FLORIDIANS SURVIVE ON THE SALARIES HERE?? This is ludacris!! How does one make 30-35,000 a year (I made this amount when I was 22 years old, still in college..Im now 34) and still able to live a happy and content life without going bankrupt and way up to their scalp in debt???!!! HOW, HOW, HOW?????

Please provide some words of wisdom and experiences!!

This is why Florida is so transient, I am also moving the end of this summer to escape the horrible pay. You can not build a bright future with the low-wages we are subjected to in Florida.

This is awful! Luckily my fiance makes good money..but as an individual..an experienced hard working individual, you would like to see your paycheck equate to your abilities.

Why did you move to Florida? I'm just asking because surely you were warned the pay was low here?

Florida isn't the poorest state in the country but there's much less of a middle class here vs. other states. And there also is not a diverse job market like in other areas.

Abilities here don't equate to your paycheck or your job, especially if you don't have an advanced degree. There are also fewer niche type jobs that people can get, ones that don't require an advanced degree but do require the right kind of person- those really don't exist in Florida.

Ugh, how many whining about pay threads do we need? Couldn't this have been posted in one of the other threads? Looking suspicious to me...

To all whiners:

1. Why did you move without lining up a job and knowing how much you would get paid?
2. You conveniently leave out what skills, if any you have. It's a free market, you say your abilities are worth more, but the market doesn't agree with you. If another city has better supply/demand situation (i.e. less people with your skills, more demand for your skills) then yes move there. I don't see people with good skills having a problem finding decent jobs.

And to the original poster you say your fiancee makes good money. Is he whining too?

Sorry if this sounds harsh, but really, enough already.

He is no different than the majority of northerns that move here after making a ton of money up north and then see nothing wrong with the ridiculous pay here in Florida because they are living off the wealth they produced elsewhere.
I agree with you totally..the cost of living just does not equate to salaries.

Hats off to folks that budget well and are still able to maintain their way of living during these times.

Calm down everyone.. Remember..

Be civil, no personal attacks, flaming, or insults. We may attack ideas (politely) but we do not attack the speaker of the idea. Be careful with your words, there is a point where being direct crosses a line into blunt, in-your-face hostility. Please, report bad posts instead of engaging in flame wars on the boards. Insulting another member or a moderator will not be tolerated anywhere on this website. This includes Direct Messages.

If you disagree with something, say so, but explain WHY.

Stay on topic. Attempts to hi-jack threads by switching topics or going off topic will be deleted and infractions issued. This is not a chat room - when people hi-jack threads by posting messages that are of interest to only few people, the threads often stop being useful discussions of initial topics.

Magnulus,

I moved here because my partner was promoted, great offer/pay and excellent benefits.

Before moving here, I was very much aware of the paycut I'd experience but it just baffles me how single people are able to survive with the economy crisis and steady low pay. Personally, based on my everyday lifestyle, buying food, bills, mortgage etc..I couldnt survive on 25-35,000 salary.

Just so I'm clear, my question is, how does one manage their lifestyle here when their paycheck doesnt compensate?

I guess you would have to change your lifestyle or find a job to support it.

I agree the pay is not good for some jobs vs other places but I Manage and I like the area plus most of my family is here.
