With Orlando having predominately low wages due to the service based economy coupled with Florida being a right to work state, how long do you think it will be before people will no longer be able to afford to get to their jobs. Due to lack of aqequate public transpotation, there are few alternatives to driving to work. Of course, in some situations, carpooling may be an option.

Even when the economy was so-called "good" I knew plenty of people doing gas drive-offs. Even when companies are doing really well, most Orlando jobs still don't increase wages. I only see it getting even worse, along with the crime, murders, etc.

Back in the day when I worked in the service industry, I rode the bus from the east side of town to I-drive. I walked about a mile to the bus stop and it took me 1 1/2 hours to get there but I did it.
(Kinda like the story of I walked 20 miles in the snow everyday to get to school. lol) I make a whole lot more now than I did then and my family is still finding ways to cut back. While not great the bus system is better than it was so I'm going to have a hard time feeling sorry for people that don't even try to be inventive on ways to make it. |

There'll be some impact, but theme park business overall has remained pretty strong so I don't think the impact will be huge. Gas prices are causing even well paid people to cut back, so it's definitely a drag on the overall economy. Oil right now is like the housing bubble, it'll pop eventually...

I am not referring to the people, especially foreigners, who visit the theme parks. I am referring to the people who work at those theme parks. If no one can afford to get to work, then what?

My point was as long as theme park business is strong they'll raise wages if they have to in order to keep workers, they'll have no other choice.

This could be a thread in just about any city forum here. Sorry to break it to all you who are known Orlando bashers here, but this city doesn't corner the market on low wages. The minimum wage workers here will have to deal with high gas prices the same as their counterparts in every other city in America. Suck it up and take it. Nobody likes it, but I'm pretty sure there's nothing we can do about it (in the short term future) other than ride-share. Maybe the minimum wage will increase soon.
