I have to ask that if you hated it, why are you moving back? I'm not being snarky, I for one wouldn't move to a place that I had such bad memories of...
That being said...If Oakland/Winter Garden/Windermere were in Seminole County I would be all for them. Downtown Winter Garden is one of my favorite places. BUT since you have children, I would have to pick Winter Springs/Lake Mary/Oviedo and such.
Good luck, I hope you'll find a place that you like.

I would think it is because Seminole County has the reputation of having the best schools in Central Florida.

I have to say that where i am located in Winter Garden, we are very happy with the schools and people should do the research into schools seperatly, after all there is nothing to guarantee that you will be zoned for an excellent school in Seminole either. I do hear alot on these threads about how Seminole has a great reputation for schools, however, that doesnt mean every school is and other areas are bad. Keep in mind the stats for Orange county. Orange county encompasses a huge area from downtown to out west.
If people are genuinly that concerned about schools, they shouldnt blanket a place but rather search for good A rated schools and focus their search on that immediate area, simply because, just because you move into a certain area in Seminole, doesnt mean your children will neccessarily be zoned for that school, but maybe a bad school down the road.

There are good and not so good schools in both counties. The best way to research an area for schools is to consider the schools for each community.

Well, I have to say that I hated it as a 12 year old child. Im hoping that the things that bothered me then wont bother me now. My husband has a great job opportunity in Orlando and my parents just recently retired to Cocoa so those would be the two things drawing us there. We really enjoy Dallas and hate to leave, but im hoping that choosing the right neighborhood and schools will make the move a little easier. My husband will be commuting between Lake Margaret Dr, Raleigh St, Semoran Blvd, and North Highway 434 for his job. What would be a good location to live in that would keep his commute somewhat bearable? Thanks to everyone that have already responded. Im looking into all those areas and we hope to drive over in the next few weeks to check them out.

Lake Margaret is in the Conway area, Raleigh is in the Orlovista area.
434 runs from the Forest City area to Winter Springs and then turns into Alafaya Trail. I assume by N 434 you are talking about the Jamestown portion of Altamonte?
Semoran Blvd runs a ring around the city stretching from Apopka eastward down to the airport. Most Semoran Blvd addresses for business are by the airport or Apopka though since in Casselberry it goes by 436 in addresses and in Altamonte it changes to Altamonte Drive.
There is some clarifying that would be needed to know exactly where he is needing to commute to, but from that information I would not suggest something too far in any direction from downtown.
I would try to find one of the central areas with great schools like the Boone HS district like Conway, Delaney Park, Lake Como, Dover Shores, Colonialtown, or Belle Isle.
You could also look at the Winter Park/Maitland/Baldwin Park area which remains central, a nice option, and has a great HS in the area, Winter Park High.
If you are looking for a newer area in a suburban location, there are great options in all 4 directions but mainly North, East, and West of downtown and not South, but on some of those days your husbands commute may be much longer than others.

I would also add the Longwood area to your list which is right by Lake Mary....Sweetwater has older homes but excellent schools!
