Who thinks Orlando is 'THE CITY BEAUTIFUL" AS THE RECENT MAYER CALLED IT? (Greenwood: best neighborhood, how much)

I think several parts of Orlando are quite beautiful, so it is fitting.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder though.

Interesting that I should read this tonight. I just returned from a lovely dinner downtown at the Citrus Club and was really impressed with how much better downtown is looking. It has come a long way in the last 3-4 years. The landscaping along Orange Avenue is beautiful, with hanging baskets and street lights. The restaurants were loaded with nice looking young men and women spilling out onto the sidewalk cafes. The sidewalks themselves were clean. Quite a change from a few years ago, when all you saw were transients alongside darkened, broken down buildings and tattooed young people looking for their next fix.

I think some of the newer areas lack character and some older parts of town in less nice areas are ugly, but every city has their ugly areas. The areas around downtown and Lake Eola and all of the older neighborhoods in Colonialtown and Delaney Park and Thornton Park, as well as College Park are very pretty to me.

I agree Wilshire. The older downtown neighborhoods I find are beautiful, especially around the little lakes. I think one the best neighborhood parks is Lake Davis and Lake Cherokee looking towards the downtown skyline. There's also a park right next to the 408 and the cemetery that is very nice.

I walk around the Greenwood Wetlands by the cemetary, it is very nice in there. I find those neighborhoods very charming, it is much more Georgia/Louisiana feeling than I expected of a city in Florida when I first moved here. The brick paved streets are pretty too and a pretty good way to keep people from speeding through your neighborhoods. The areas people say are ugly are probably the cheaply constructed urban sprawl areas out in all 4 directions from downtown. While some of those areas are attractive, some are very modest and downright ugly too so I can understand that.

I love the older downtown neighborhoods! And that park I think you are referring to is lake under hill park.
